Summary

To be responsible for providing the appropriate nursing evidence-based care of an allocated group of patients. To work as part of a multidisciplinary team using resources efficiently. To deliver quality care to patients and to supervise the working of the team during shifts. To be competent in carrying out a variety of clinical procedures. To ensure high standards of nursing care are given and maintained. Act when standards are not being upheld. To recognise changes in a patients condition which requires the intervention of others and refer the patients on as appropriate. Act as a clinical role model, providing leadership and guidance to staff on operational and professional issues, ensuring clinical expertise and practice is enhanced. Be proactive in the development of the clinical area, supporting and planning process and service development, contribute new ideas to improve patient care. Act as a mentor/preceptor to students and new staff members. Contribute to the audit process and utilise results in practice To work within the NMC code of professional practice, and within the Policies, procedures and guidelines of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust Support the Senior Sister and Matron in ensuring the department has appropriate link nurses and supports them in undertaking the role. Develop and motivate the team. Lead the team to meet local divisional and Trust objectives. Co-ordinate the service across the Huddersfield and Calderdale sites in line with regional and national guidelines. To take an active role in risk assessment, supporting the implementation of strategies to minimise risk. Ensure incidents and near misses are reported, through promotion of a no blame culture. To manage complaints and escalate where necessary. To establish and maintain effective communication, both verbal and written and build relationships within the multidisciplinary teams. To recognise and prevent where possible areas of conflict and escalate if necessary. Undertake appraisals for the team. Supervise and deploy staff appropriately taking into account knowledge and skill mix. To monitor sickness/absence in accordance to the Trust policy. To take an active role in the recruitment and selection process of junior staff. Act as an innovative and enthusiastic role model, providing leadership, guidance and advice to staff on operational and professional issues. Attend and participate in meetings as required including providing feedback and disseminating information as appropriate. Deputising for ward/departmental manager. Be proactive in the development of clinical area, supporting the ward manager in business planning process/service development, through contribution of new ideas to improve patient care/experience. To have an awareness of budget and resources and support the ward manager with the management of the budget.
