University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated clinician to join our MSK services as a Band 6 Trainee Enhanced Trauma Musculoskeletal (MSK) Practitioner, or as an established Enhanced Practitioner. This developmental role supports progression toward advanced practice through structured training, clinical supervision, and exposure to advanced MSK pathways including the Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC), Fracture Clinic, Emergency Department (ED), and core MSK physiotherapy.
Working within a supportive, multidisciplinary team, you will gain experience managing a range of acute MSK presentations and trauma. Under supervision, you’ll develop enhanced clinical reasoning, decision-making, and communication skills beyond traditional Band 6 expectations.
You will be involved in triage, assessment, and management of patients with complex MSK and orthopaedic conditions, while developing confidence in providing specialist advice and education to patients, carers, and colleagues. You’ll work closely with the wider MDT to ensure efficient, safe, and patient-centred care.
UHD is committed to your development, offering mentorship, structured teaching, peer learning, and access to regional enhanced practice networks. This is an excellent opportunity for those aspiring to progress to Band 7 Enhanced Practice roles within a forward-thinking trust.
Support the assessment and management of patients with acute and complex MSK conditions across physiotherapy, the Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC), fracture clinic, and Emergency Department (ED). Under supervision, assist in triage, virtual consultations, and face-to-face assessments while developing clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making skills.
Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients and carers with empathy. Provide verbal and written information to support informed consent and offer guidance on managing the impact of MSK conditions, promoting self-management where appropriate.
Engage in structured training, supervision, and reflective practice to support your development toward enhanced practitioner status. Participate in service improvement projects, audits, and share good practice through local and regional networks.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. Support the implementation of updated protocols and pathways across MSK/VFC/ED services. Demonstrate a growing ability to work across organisational and professional boundaries in line with UHD’s values.
Our values define who we are as #TeamUHD. They underpin everything we do now and in the future. They define how we treat our patients, visitors, and each other, our valued teammates and colleagues.
UHD are investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme.
This means that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term. Recruiting Managers interviewing for this role will be happy to answer any specific questions that you have about this at interview.
Please note if the role or service is relocated as part of a planned move, employees will not be eligible for excess mileage reimbursement. Travel from the postholder's home to the new work base will be considered a normal commute. Any other changes not related to this relocation will be managed according to the relevant Trust or National terms and conditions.
This role is suitable for existing or aspiring enhanced practice physiotherapists. Please refer to the attached documents for detail on the training and assessment procedure to transition from band 6 to 7.
