Are you an experienced and highly motivated Project Engineering Manager with a proven track record in demanding infrastructure sectors? Do you thrive in a dynamic, project-based environment and possess the expertise to drive complex engineering projects from Concept through to Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Detailed Design? If so, we want to hear from you!

We are seeking a talented and dedicated freelance Project Engineering Manager to join our network of specialist consultants. You will play a pivotal role in delivering critical projects across various sectors, ensuring technical excellence, efficient delivery, and successful outcomes throughout all design phases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the engineering aspects of diverse projects, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, specifications, and regulations.

  • Drive the Concept Design phase, translating initial client requirements and project objectives into viable engineering solutions, including feasibility studies and technology selection.

  • Oversee the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) process, developing comprehensive engineering packages that define the project scope, key deliverables, equipment specifications, and preliminary cost estimates.

  • Manage and coordinate the Detailed Design phase, ensuring the production of accurate and buildable engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and other technical documentation necessary for procurement and construction.

  • Develop and implement project engineering strategies, plans, and procedures across all design stages.

  • Liaise effectively with clients, stakeholders, contractors, and internal teams to ensure seamless information flow and design integration.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to project teams, resolving complex engineering challenges that arise throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Manage project budgets and schedules related to engineering activities, identifying and mitigating potential risks at each design stage.

  • Ensure rigorous quality control and adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards throughout the design process.

  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes and methodologies.

Essential Experience & Skills:

  • Demonstrable experience as a Project Engineering Manager (or similar senior role) with a strong emphasis on managing projects from Concept to FEED and Detailed Design.

  • Significant experience in heavy civils projects (e.g., large-scale earthworks, foundations, bridges, tunnels), including a clear understanding of the design progression in these environments.

  • Proven expertise within the water sector (e.g., treatment plants, pipelines, flood defense schemes), including experience with hydraulic design and process engineering through all design phases.

  • Experience within the nuclear sector (e.g., new build, decommissioning, operational support) is highly desirable, showcasing an understanding of the rigorous design and assurance processes required.

  • Strong understanding of relevant engineering principles, design software, and project management methodologies applicable to each design stage.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively manage multi-disciplinary design teams.

  • Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.

  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.

  • Relevant engineering degree and professional accreditation (e.g., CEng, PEng).

Crucially, the ability to gain and maintain UK security clearance is essential for this role.

Candidates who do not meet this requirement will unfortunately not be considered.

Why Join Us?

  • Opportunity to work on challenging and impactful projects across critical infrastructure sectors, taking them from initial idea to fully engineered solutions.
