Summary


Health Care Assistant (HCA) act as members of the care team working under the supervision and guidance of registered nurses/midwives and other professional staff.

HCA’s assist in the planning, implementation, evaluation and delivery of care by providing support to registered staff, patients and their families.

This will be achieved through the performance of specific care tasks carried out after the successful programme of formal training and assessment.

Basic nursing experience is necessary, as are good communication skills both verbally and in writing.

Clinical Duties

- To assist with basic nursing care, e.g. washing, moving and handling, mouth care, eye care, testing urine, assisting in pressure area care and generally attending to patient comfort.

- To assist with transferring patients to the ward on discharge.

- To clean and prepare bed area for new admissions

- To damp dust equipment and bed area daily. Clearing unused equipment.

- To clean and check equipment daily.

- To be aware of and implement the Trust’s procedures and protocols on the following:

o Moving and Handling

o Barrier Nursing

o Cross Infection

o Cardiac Arrest

o Fire

o Major Incident

o Dealing with patients’ property

o Dealing with Violence and Aggression

o Incident Reporting

o Any other relevant procedures and protocols.
