An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated trainee ED physician (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership and management to join University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust as a Chief Medical Registrar starting in August 2025. The post will be based at the Royal Derby Hospital.

This role provides a senior higher specialty (ED) trainee with the opportunity to develop valuable skills in leadership and management. The role is devised to ensure a minimum of 40% protected time to put these skills into practice by developing initiatives that address local challenges. Chief registrars have a tangible impact on service improvement, workforce transformation, engagement and morale, education and training and work to deliver better outcomes for patients, colleagues and organisations.

Trainees will benefit from a flexible training model that enables them to develop a portfolio of skills and experience that will benefit future consultant posts and leadership roles and build a profile that marks them out as a future clinical leader. The clinical component (60%) can be modified according to your individual needs in collaboration with your training programme

The Chief Medical Registrar will be supported both by the medical division senior management team and nationally from the bespoke leadership and management development programme provided by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

This years RCP leadership and management development programme commences in August/September 2025 and will involve some travel. The RCP cannot reimburse travel and accommodation expenses. The Trust will pay the programme fees for 2025/26

Applications are open to trainee Emergency Medicine physicians:
• At ST4 or above in Emergency Medicine
• Working full time or less-than-full-time
• With a National Training Number (NTN)
• With full GMC registration with a licence to practice
• Who do not hold a CCT or be within 6 months of completion of training on intended start date

This is a fixed-term role, starting in August 2025, for a minimum of 12 months. The role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training or experience). Less than full time applications are welcomed.

Applications must be discussed with your current educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD) and permission to apply must be granted by the TPD (where applicable).

As this post is funded by the Deanery, applications will only be accepted by candidates that hold a National Training Number (NTN) and retain this for the duration of the post. The post is available to doctors in training who will rotate to UHDB in August 2025 or whom will apply via their TPD for OOPE/T in order to undertake this post. This position cannot be offered on a locally employed contract due to the funding.
