Summary
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and hard-working Band 6 Deputy Ward Manager (Registered Mental Health Nurse) to work with the multi-disciplinary team on Hume ward.
Hume ward is a 15 bed Male Low Secure Unit ward, currently located on the Springfield Hospital site, part of Southwest London and St Georges NHS Trust Forensic service, Shaftesbury Clinic. We are part of the South London Mental Health Partnership (with SLAM and Oxleas) and Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services sharing learning, expertise and innovation and improve the quality of care and treatment of service users and the development of staff.
We provides short- and long-term hospital admissions to male patients suffering from serious mental health problems such as psychotic illness, bipolar affective disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Admissions are generally agreed with the referring team/court/Ministry of Justice.
Our Multidisciplinary team are responsible for assessing, managing and reducing the risk to patients and the community whilst in our care. The team works in collaboration with the referring team to help the patient move back to an appropriate community setting as soon as possible.
Applicant must have at least 1 year experience as a band 5 nurse and must have completed their preceptorship.
The post holder will be responsible for supporting the Ward Manager in implementing and monitoring all policies and ensuring that the ward functions in line with the Trust and service line philosophy of providing respectful compassionate care that is of the highest quality. The post holder will also support the Ward Management to ensure that supervision and appraisal systems are robustly implemented and that the care provided is of the highest possible standard in line with the service’s clinical governance framework. The Deputy Ward Manager will support the Ward Manager with providing a safe environment within which all staff can deliver care and support to patients and their significant others. He/she will be equipped with the skills and knowledge and resources to ensure effective deployment of resources within agreed budgets.

1. Leading in the assessment, admission and management of service user care needs through ensuring, Initial data collection, Monitoring of individual service user progress, Feedback and discussion Producing reports and in-care reviews, Devising a plan of care and intervention.
2. Ensuring that service user’s fundamentals of care needs are met – including nutrition, hydration, hygiene, and comfort
3. To be aware of, and ensure that, the care team support the holistic needs of all service users, such as psychological, social, physical, recreational and spiritual needs
4. Co-ordinating and evaluating collaborative patient centred care, getting feedback and improving plans with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT)
5. Carrying out nursing procedures that give safe and effective care, observations of physical and mental state, and ensuring escalation of concerns as appropriate if deterioration is observed
6. Administering and monitoring the side-effects of medication and monitoring service user compliance
7. Undertaking and interpreting physical health care assessments, on-going physical health monitoring and reviews of service users. Recording any changes in the service user’s physical health and acting appropriately. Promoting healthy lifestyles and giving health promotion advice and support
8. Providing accurate information about care in an accessible format to patients and their relatives and carers
9. Liaising and working positively with members of the multi- disciplinary team and partner organisations
10. Working safely to ensure safe custody of medicines, sharps, and clinical equipment, and reporting of all incidents following trust policy
11. Recognising and valuing service users as individuals, acknowledging the importance of maintaining respect and dignity at all times and ensure that the care provided respects equality and diversity
12. Encouraging and empowering service users to have an optimum level of responsibility for their individual programme of care and with their consent, where appropriate, seek the cooperation of friends, relatives and carers, following ‘recovery’ principles and approaches
13. Maintaining accurate patient written and electronic records, in line with Trust Policy, procedure and protocols. Use and complete care plans, pathway documents and progress notes appropriately and in a timely manner
14. Contributing towards the on-going quality of service and care, to identify any risk issues in relation to the service users’ health and social care and responding appropriately if there are any changes, significant factors relevant or incidents related to the service user
15. Understanding and ensuring adherence to the Trust risk assessment policy, including being aware of the need to follow all safeguarding procedures, reporting concerns, making referrals and documenting clearly. Being aware of the necessity to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults at all times when working with service users.
