The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 3,000 skilled and committed professionals come together to provide research, advice and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for the benefit of the environment and economy.
You will act as the APHA Security Risk Manager and point of contact for APHA vetting (working in the capacity of an intelligent client relationship with Defra colleagues). You will have critical input to defining security policies for the Weybridge site under direction of the Weybridge Security Manager.
As the APHA Security Risk Manager, you will support the department to fulfil its departmental and statutory security responsibilities.
This is an exciting and meaningful opportunity to join the Government Security Profession, playing a significant part in ensuring the APHA is meeting its wide-ranging obligations. transformation, and establishing a new security function for APHA aligned to Government Functional Standard Security 007.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Regular engagement with Defra Group Security and Defra Group Property (in an Intelligent Client function for both security risk management and security vetting) to ensure security risk management is consistent are met; aligned to the Defra security risk management policies.
- Maintaining the APHA security risk registers and the implementation of effective security risk management (of potential threats, vulnerabilities and impacts) and appropriate risk mitigation, reducing physical security risks to an acceptable level, with input from internal and external stakeholders as required.
- Support internal security governance process, including with Defra Group Security.
- Act as the Secretary for the APHA Security Working Group.
- Acting as the lead for Weybridge site security in the absence of the Weybridge Site Security Manager.
- Oversee the vetting of APHA personnel and suppliers as appropriate in the most efficient and cost effective a manner. This will include contractor vetting as required, especially in relation to APHA’s main science sites.
- Supporting the National Biosecurity Centre Security management of vetting requirements.
- Assist in monitoring and reporting against vetting performance levels, whilst working with the Defra Vetting team to enhance Management Information and reporting systems.
- Assist in highlighting any security clearance gaps in the delivery of APHA business in conjunction with Defra Group Security.
- Regular interaction with colleagues across, and outside, APHA on national security vetting and relevant other security areas
- Supporting the APHA Physical Security Advisors on other tasks as required and provide security advice as required.
