Summary

The purpose of this position will be to be responsible for the effective and efficient operation and management of the PASS laboratory operations. Ensuring that the laboratory operates in line with the Quality Management System, the business and client requirements to fully meet ISO 17025 and Official Control Laboratory (OCL) requirements.

Please note this is a full time role working 37 hours per week - Monday to Friday 09:00 till 17:00.

Day to day management of laboratory staff in all aspects of laboratory activities.
Ensure the laboratory operates within the QMS and complies with all policies, procedures and associated documents. Ensure the laboratory operates in line with ISO17025 and OCL requirements.
Review test methods and relevant documentation in collaboration with the Quality and Technical team.
Train and develop staff to ensure a multi -skilled team and staff retention.
Provide technical expertise and troubleshoot laboratory technical and quality related issues, ensuring that this is communicated effectively to all parts of the business and stakeholders in a timely manner.
Responsible for ensuring the technical validity of the results and that the results are fit for purpose.
Monitor laboratory productivity and implement measures to improve overall laboratory efficiency.
Ensure robust processes and controls are in place regarding stock.
Lead laboratory projects such as the development of new and improved methods.
Ensure all laboratory records are maintained to establish a full audit trail to meet regulatory requirements. Investigate nonconforming work and complaints relating to relevant testing activities, identify root cause and implement actions to prevent recurrence.
Ensure laboratory IT system issues are identified, escalated and followed through to ensure timely resolution.
Maintain a safe working environment - H&S training, risk assessment & COSHH inventory. Ensure the lab operates in a safe manner at all times and lead by example in all activities.
Keep up to date with new test methods, to support the rational for testing and be pro-active in driving conversations with customers.
Keep up to date with food chemistry testing, regulatory requirements and food industry news, and communicate internally as required.
Establish & drive LEAN principles and sustain 5S across all areas in PASS.
Establish & Implement SQCDP in the laboratory.
Project Manage the entire lifecycle of a project from start to finish, including the planning, execution and monitoring, to ensure the project delivers the agreed objectives on time and within budget.
Carry out testing as required in the complaints laboratory to ensure TAT targets are maintained.
Work with the Business Unit Manager to define and drive sales growth plans in key business areas.
In conjunction with HR recruit new team members and deliver inductions for new starters in line with company standards.
Deputise for the Business Unit Manager in their absence.

Qualifications

Degree or equivalent in chemistry
Working knowledge of Food Chemistry laboratories accredited to ISO 17025.
Experience of working in a UKAS accredited laboratory
Experience of working with a broad range of internal and external customers.
Experience of resource and budget management.
Excellent analytical instrumentation skills, IT skills, Word, Excel, & LIMS.
Proven experience of leading a team including training and development of staff.
Excellent presentation, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills.
Excellent analytical skills and able to interpret, present and explain complex information.
Strong organisational, multi-tasking and time management skills.
Experienced in cross-functional working.
Commitment to customer care.
Project Management Experience.
Strong commercial acumen.
