The Synergy Programme is a cross-departmental group formed in response to Government Business Service’s request for individual departments to group together in ‘clusters’ to drive efficiencies, increase buying power and improve the quality of shared service to our end users – our people.

The Synergy Programme is the largest of five departmental clusters, comprising the Ministry of Justice, Department for Work and Pensions, Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Home Office. The Department of Work and Pensions hosts the Synergy Programme. Your work will impact the procurement arrangements for the next 15 years, impacting over 50% of all Civil Servants – that’s 230,000 people across the four departments and arm’s length bodies.

Success of the Programme is crucial as Civil Servants rely on shared services to provide business critical tools in human resources, finance, payroll, and procurement. It affects everything we do, from joining a department as a new starter, the way we claim for expenses, how we buy goods and services such as our laptops and canteen provisions, to the way we receive our pensions when we retire.

We are looking for applications from people who can also demonstrate a passion for our core ambition - delivering a once in a generation, transformed service that Civil Servants will use as a result of the Synergy Programme.

While no two days will be the same, the responsibilities may vary but will include:  Providing executive support to the Senior Responsible Officer (SRO) and the Executive Team as and when required. Ensuring correspondence is progressed and prioritised, identifying where action/briefing is required and commissioning as appropriate. Proactively managing Directors’ priorities and plans, resolving conflict quickly and effectively, identifying risks and taking appropriate and timely action to mitigate or escalate. Undertaking analysis and co-ordinating a wide range of data and information to inform the preparation of briefings and reports. Actively engaging, maintaining and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, collaborating with senior leaders across the organisation to anticipate and respond to issues. Understanding the strategic context of the Programme in line with new Ministerial initiatives and to apply this to prioritisation and decision making. Providing informed, sound and discrete guidance to the Directors on a range of business areas. Providing secretariat support to senior governance forums including Senior Leadership Team meetings and Business/Assurance Reviews. Supporting the Directors with commercial and procurement processes, in line with DWP Policies and Delegated Financial Authority limits. Providing leadership to the wider Business Support Network, with direct line management responsibility of a Diary Manager.
