We work closely with all portfolios to make sure all teams are enabled to complete their day-to-day jobs without having to worry about technology.

The Home Office Government Digital and Data directorate designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.

As a user researcher you will be involved in the ongoing evolution of a brand new product as well as applying your knowledge and expertise to legacy systems and their associated customer bases. As part of Engagement Platforms you will work to develop and grow a new relationship management (CRM) system which will help our customers be more efficient and offer a more personalised approached to their work with stakeholders.

You will be expected to use your experience and expertise to work with flexibility to ensure the work we do has the customer at the centre of everything whilst also being pragmatic in your approach. You will plan and lead user research activities. You will develop research strategy and test design, as well as lead on expansive discovery research and analysis. You will lead research using a range of methods, including usability testing, contextual interviews, accessibility research and will lead on rapid analysis that involves the wider team.

You will work with colleagues from many other professions, including product, business analysis and other areas of user centred design. You may be required to facilitate governance meetings and will be expected to feed into the processes. As a member of the DDaT community, you will also contribute to cross-government communities of practice and help to set good practice and standards.

What you will do

Your main day to day responsibilities will be:

  • Leading the planning, design and execution of user research and usability testing to understand user needs and behaviours and inform the design and development of government services.
  • Influencing how decisions are made and constructively challenging ways of thinking at both the team and senior stakeholder level.
  • Leading other user researchers within a digital delivery team, mentoring and up-skilling researchers and supporting the growth and development of the team.
  • Taking a user centred, evidence-based approach by turning user research findings into actionable insights that influence service/product development.
  • Supporting digital delivery teams to build accessible digital services by ensuring that participants with access needs and low digital skills are included in all research.
  • Sharing insights from research and examples of best practice where they can help other researchers across the Home Office.
  • Aligning user research activities with wider organisational objectives to provide strategic insights that inform policy and proposition.
