Summary
To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work, ensuring a high standard of clinical care for patients under your management. To accept clinical responsibility as an autonomous practitioner for a designated caseload of patients, and organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and time management. To undertake the assessment and clinical diagnosis of patients using investigative and analytical skills; formulation of an individual management and/or treatment programme using clinical reasoning and a range of treatment skills in a clinic, inpatient, community or emergency department setting. To assess patients understanding of treatment proposals and their capacity to give informed consent working within the legal framework when patients lack capacity to give consent To understand the continuous assessment and evaluation of the treatment programmes and modify them according to patient needs To be actively involved in patient discharge planning involving the MDT where necessary to ensure effective care and safe discharge. To independently able to make decisions to discharge patients from physiotherapy treatment. To understand and advise when a patient may require admission based on your assessment and own clinical reasoning. To assess and manage clinical risk within your own patient caseload to ensure your own and your patients safety To participate in the on call and emergency duties within the Trust having been assessed as competent. To utilise a range of communication skills in order to be able to overcome barriers to communication e.g. language, learning disability, anxiety, anger and to deal effectively with sensitive and/or contentious issues. To communicate assessment and treatment outcomes appropriately to Physiotherapy colleagues, medical staff, social care and other professionals in the form of letters and reports. To be aware of, and comply with, organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in reviewing and updating as appropriate To be responsible for the safe ad competent use of all equipment, appliances and aids and ensuring it is safe for its purpose prior to use. To delegate to, supervise and support the work of Physiotherapy assistants and support workers/Technicians. To plan and teach care programmes or specific training to others e.g.carers, nurses, assistants, teachers To maintain own continuing professional development and develop current knowledge of evidence based practice within each rotation by active involvement in the appraisal process, clinical supervision, in service training, reflective practice and the preparation and presentations of projects as appropriate, incorporating new knowledge and skills into everyday practice as appropriate To demonstrate a high level of manual handling skills e.g. positioning and transferring skills, use of hoists, walking aids using moderate physical effort required throughout the day. To have a good level of dexterity and precision when using manual physiotherapy skills (suctioning, inserting nasal airways, chest manual techniques, manual hyperinflation, joint and soft tissue mobilisation) To be exposed to bodily fluids e.g. urine, faeces, sputum, blood, vomit, and noxious smell on a daily basis To exercise mental effort frequently during assessments, teaching sessions, and using technical equipment. To maintain comprehensive and accurate written records in line with the Trust standards and Professional standards. To achieve and maintain a competent level of IT skills appropriate to each area e.g. use of RIO, EMIS, Software systems and Electronic Patient records. To collect data and statistics as required.
