Summary

We’re looking for a Skilled Fitter to join our Engineering Team and play a vital role in maintaining a safe, reliable, and road-ready fleet of buses. If you’re proud of your trade, thrive in a face-paced workshop, and care about getting the job done right, this is the role for you.

Job Purpose:

To maintain, service, and repair the bus fleet to ensure vehicles are safe, roadworthy, and fully compliant with DVSA and company standards. The Skilled Fitter ensures high standards of reliability and performance in daily operations, contributing to the safety and satisfaction of passengers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Carry out scheduled inspections, servicing, and repairs on buses, including engines, gearboxes, suspension, and braking systems.
• Complete preventative maintenance tasks to reduce vehicle downtime.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults.
• Prepare vehicles for MOT tests and ensure compliance with DVSA standards.
• Complete all relevant documentation and job cards accurately using maintenance management systems.
• Respond to on-road vehicle breakdowns and perform repairs or recovery as needed.
• Ensure work is carried out safely and in accordance with Health & Safety guidelines.
• Keep the workshop, tools, and equipment clean, safe, and in good working order.
• Support apprentices or junior staff with guidance and knowledge sharing when required.

Qualifications & Experience:

• NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in a bus or heavy vehicle maintenance role.
• Sound knowledge of DVSA inspection standards and safety requirements.
• Experience using diagnostic tools and interpreting fault codes.
• PCV Licence (preferred or willingness to train).


• IRTEC accreditation (desirable).

Skills & Competencies:

• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
• Practical knowledge of diesel and (if applicable) hybrid or electric buses.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet service deadlines.
• Reliable, punctual, and committed to high-quality workmanship.
• Good communication and teamworking skills.

Working Conditions:

• Shift work may be required, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
• Work is carried out both in workshops and occasionally roadside or outdoors in varying weather conditions.
