Summary

To carry out high-quality maintenance, repair, and inspection of HGVs and other commercial vehicles in accordance with CVRM standards and DVSA regulations. The Skilled Fitter plays a vital role in ensuring fleet reliability, safety, and compliance, contributing to the smooth operation of transport services.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform scheduled maintenance, servicing, and repairs on HGVs, trailers, and commercial vehicles.
• Conduct inspections in accordance with DVSA and company standards, including PMI and MOT preparations.
• Diagnose faults using manual and diagnostic tools
• Repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems to manufacturer specifications.
• Replace or repair defective parts including brakes, suspension, steering, lighting, and drivetrains.
• Ensure accurate completion of job cards and service records using fleet management systems.
• Adhere strictly to Health & Safety, environmental, and COSHH regulations.
• Report unsafe or recurring vehicle issues and recommend appropriate action.
• Assist with roadside breakdowns and recovery as required.
• Maintain tools and workshop equipment in a safe, serviceable condition.
• Support apprentices or junior staff with guidance and knowledge sharing when required.

Qualifications & Experience:

• NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent).
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in a commercial vehicle workshop environment.
• Proven ability to service and repair HGVs to a high standard.
• Good knowledge of DVSA inspection criteria and compliance standards.
• Experience with diagnostic tools and modern vehicle electronics.
• HGV Licence (Class 1 or 2) preferred or willingness to obtain.
• IRTEC accreditation (desirable).

• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication and reporting skills.
• High attention to detail and quality workmanship.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently.

Working Conditions:

• Shift work may be required (early, late, weekends).
• Indoor and outdoor work in varying conditions.
• May involve physically demanding tasks including lifting and working under vehicles.
