Summary

The successful candidates will:
  • Work with the Director to build and lead a new directorate - with colleagues based across the UK - ensuring a positive team culture and focus on excellence in delivery.
  • Play an active role as part of DCMS’s Senior Civil Servant cohort, providing strategic leadership, supporting delivery of Ministers’ priorities, and our commitment to a diverse and engaged workforce.
  • Be active leaders within DCMS’s project delivery profession, supporting wider programme delivery in the department.

Deputy Director, Facilities and Major Events

  • Serve as the UK Government’s Senior Responsible Owner for a range of other major sporting events, including the Rugby World Cup 2025, Commonwealth Games 2026, European Athletics Championships 2026 and Tour de France/Tour de France Femmes Grand Départ 2027.
  • Act as Programme Director for the UK Government’s FIFA World Cup 2035 Bid Team, coordinating with the devolved governments and working closely with Home Nation football associations.
  • Lead on strategy to ensure the UK continues to secure and deliver major sporting events in the future, working closely with UK Sport, national governing bodies, the devolved governments, and others across DCMS and the UK Government.
  • Serve as Senior Responsible Owner of the department’s grassroots sports facilities investment.

Deputy Director, EURO 2028 Programme

Act as the Programme Director overseeing the Government’s commitment to deliver UEFA EURO 2028, working seamlessly with Government and football partners across the UK and Ireland, ensuring the highest standards of project delivery.

This includes:

  • overseeing effective governance and assurance mechanisms as part of the Programme Management Office;
  • ensuring effective financial management of the UK Government’s funding for the tournament;
  • overseeing compliance with the guarantees with which the Government has committed to UEFA it will comply;
  • working with partners to ensure a safe & successful event;
  • delivering related legislation; and
  • overseeing an impactful legacy programme and related impact evaluation.
