To deliver this, we develop and implement policy, provide funding, deliver legislation and work with partners across the UK to ensure safer and stronger communities. We work with our partners in law enforcement, across government, the voluntary and community sector, local authorities and more broadly in our efforts.
The Safer Streets Mission sits within PSG and is the vehicle to drive delivery across government to halve violence against women and girls, halve knife crime, and restore confidence in the policing and justice system.
The Strategy and Corporate Governance unit is a part of the Safer Streets, Strategy and Joint Combatting Drugs Directorate. In this role, you will be an integral member of the Directorate’s senior leadership team and the wider PSG SCS community.

As Deputy Director you will lead our critical central capability which provides our strategic oversight of performance, delivery and people across PSG. This includes ensuring we understand pressures and priorities, that we are anticipating future requirements, and that we are enabling the wider efforts of PSG through the capabilities (e.g. resourcing, planning, risk management) that the team offers.
This is an exciting, stimulating and challenging role. You will work closely with the Director General and their team of Directors to support their ambitions for the Group.
You will be an empowering and strategic leader with a commitment to delivery excellence, collaboration and continuous improvement. You will provide accountability and join-up for PSG, which links performance, delivery and resourcing. You will cover a broad portfolio, so will need to be comfortable managing multiple competing priorities, and with pivoting to respond to new or emerging challenges. This brings with it real opportunity to make a difference to both the work of PSG and for the team working in PSG. This is an exciting and busy agenda which requires careful prioritisation and offers scope for creativity over how and where to focus your and the team’s efforts.
Team Responsibilities:
You will lead three areas of focus in this role: 1) Strategy, Performance and Delivery 2) PSG Hub 3) Corporate and Resourcing.
- Strategy, Performance and Delivery:

- Managing risk and issues for PSG and ensuring that we are taking adequate steps to mitigate these;
- Leading our corporate governance to support robust decision-making by the PSG Board;
Providing challenge to the Board and its members on approach and priorities, identifying opportunities to strengthen PSG’s strategic oversight, and implementing these.
- PSG Hub:
- Development of our central capability (the PSG Hub team) which provides a cross-cutting function for PSG, leading on cross-cutting areas of work (including briefing, policy development and Parliamentary business).
- Corporate and Resourcing:
- Delivery of PSG’s people priorities, fostering a supportive and engaging work environment across the Group and working in partnership with the PSG People Group to ensure PSG is a rewarding and brilliant place to work;
- Leading initiatives with HR Business Partner colleagues to attract, develop, and retain top talent, ensuring a diverse and inclusive workforce;
- Strategic workforce planning to meet current and future resourcing priorities;
- Ensuring optimal use of estates and facilities and other enabling corporate functions which support PSG’s priorities;

Your key responsibilities in this role will be:
- Leading the development of our long-term strategy within PSG, with a particular focus on systems thinking and resilience.
- Ensuring we are fully connecting our priorities with considerations around people and resourcing.
- Responsibility for the corporate governance of PSG, ensuring we can function effectively as a Group through the enablers provided by your team and partners across the wider department.
- Driving innovation and change by developing, piloting and testing ideas and approaches to bring in talent, improving policy productivity and building capability across the group.
- Oversight of Group-level performance and assurance, ensuring that we are understanding and identifying emerging risks and devising strategies for mitigating them.
- Leadership of your immediate team of c.40 people, demonstrating an inclusive and approachable leadership style which gets the best out of a diverse team with a wide range of skills and capabilities, and which supports them through change and reprioritisation.
- Being an active member of the directorate senior management team and the wider PSG SCS community, working to create a supportive, stimulating, and empathetic culture for colleagues.
