We are looking for an experienced professional with strong technical skills to help protect and enhance our valuable groundwater resource in East Midlands area.

The specific focus areas for this role are:

• Providing expert advice to internal and external customers to support environmental permitting including groundwater activities (discharges to ground), waste management sites, landfills and other installations.
• Responding to planning consultations, including residential, commercial, mineral and waste developments, providing risk-based technical and regulatory advice on groundwater protection and remediation of land and groundwater contamination. Including in relation to high profile Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.

You may also have the opportunity to contribute to the team’s work in some of these other areas:
• Risk assessment and providing advice on response to and remediation of pollution incidents.
• Managing agricultural diffuse pollution.
• Responding to consultations on groundwater abstraction licence applications to protect water resources.
• Groundwater modelling.
• Groundwater flooding.
• Management of groundwater monitoring networks.
• Experience of Landfill engineering and Landfill Gas migration would be welcomed.

Incident response remains a top priority for the Environment Agency. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you.

The team
You will be part of the multi-functional Groundwater, Hydrology and Contaminated Land Team. We provide specialist technical expertise to other operational teams including the National Permitting Service, Environment Management and Sustainable Places teams to support the regulation of water resources and land contamination.

Experience/skills required
You will have a minimum of a degree (or equivalent relevant experience) in a relevant discipline such as geology/hydrogeology/geochemistry/land quality or similar and ideally have an MSc (or equivalent relevant experience) in a related subject.

You will have considerable experience of working within the groundwater and/or contaminated land sector. You will have good working knowledge in areas such as the Environmental Permitting Regulations and planning regime as it relates to management of land and groundwater contamination.

You will need excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and the ability influence others through your work. You will have the ability to work as part of a team, manage your own workload and meet tight deadlines.

You will also need to carry out site visits and travel between offices, so you will need a full UK driving licence.
