Summary


As a Junior Cardiac Physiologist you will be required to work as a competent practitioner within the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Duties will include both invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigations, providing adequate technical cover during the department’s normal working hours. Cardiac Physiologists with a background in adult cardiology will be supported to undergo paediatric cardiology training.

- To provide support to the cardiac OPD (paediatrics) by performing cardiological testing: ECG, Holter monitor analysis, to assist with the ETT and CPET service on inpatients and outpatients

- To work with the bookings team to ensure appointments are booked appropriately

- House-keeping tasks - such as stock taking.

- To gain experience in the congenital cardiac catheter laboratory

The Evelina London is one of the leading children’s hospitals in the UK and a premier paediatric cardiac centre.

The Department of Congenital Heart Disease, sits within the Surgery, PICU and Theatres directorate and our cardiac program manages the full spectrum of congenital heart problems on one site, providing continuous care from the fetus (Fetal Cardiology Unit, Evelina), through childhood (Paediatric Cardiology, Evelina) into adult life (Adult Congenital Heart Disease – ACHD at St. Thomas’ Hospital).

Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ in February 2021 and is now the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the UK and among the largest in Europe. We provide treatment for people with heart and lung disease, including rare and complex conditions, offering some of the most sophisticated treatment that is available anywhere in the world.

Our integrated approach to caring for patients from before birth, through childhood, adolescence and into adulthood and old age has been replicated around the world and has gained the Evelina London Hospital a reputation as a leader in heart and lung diagnosis, treatment and research.

We are working in partnership with King’s Health Partners, to deliver our vision of creating a new centre of excellence, which will be the global leader in the research into and treatment of heart and lung disease, in patients from pre-birth to old age.

Principle Responsibilities and duties:

To be technically proficient as a competent practitioner for both paediatric and young adult patients with departmental support:
• Performing and interpreting ECGs during outpatient clinics and for in-patients.
• Application of ambulatory ECG, blood pressure and event monitors.
• Use a specialist range of ECG interpretation skills to analyse tapes and event recordings and provide reports. Use judgement to seek further specialist opinions where appropriate.
• Assist the Senior Cardiac Physiologist during treadmill exercise tests and cardiopulmonary exercise tests, with monitoring ECG, BP and O2 during the test. In both physiologist led and doctor supervised settings.
• Be responsible for preparing and operating the crash trolley and cardiac defibrillator during ETT and CPET for cardioversion and emergency life support.
• Take responsibility for maintaining stock levels of consumables
• Receive exposure in the paediatric cardiac catheter lab and in the MRI catheter lab, with supervised reporting to support the clinical team and to provide a good level of service to other specialties
• Ensure awareness of local policies and procedures and that staff are working within them – (handling and lifting, blood spillage etc).
• Raise the physiologist profile by promoting good practice initiatives within the Trust.
• Completion of BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology Degree or equivalent.
• Complete PTP logbook if not done so already or demonstrate equivalence. To be trained using the predominant patient information system Epic.
• To liaise with administration staff when booking in patient tests to ensure efficient work flow
• To undertake additional staff development and training courses agreed with the line Manager.
• Participate in departmental ECG teaching sessions and research projects as appropriate
• Annual PILS Training.
