DETAILS OF THE DEPARTMENT AND SERVICE The Neurosciences Department is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and includes: two neurosurgical wards, one neurology ward, a short stay/investigation facility, a neuroscience critical care area, four dedicated operating theatres, an imaging and interventional radiology centre including MRI, multimodal CT scanning and angiography, a neurophysiology unit, neuropathology, a neurosciences outpatient suite and seminar facilities. The inpatient unit is based on the 4th Floor of the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where neurology and neurosurgery are both located. An acute brain injury focus is intrinsic to our patient cohort and reflects developing pathways from the front door of the hospital through to rehabilitation. There is already much interest and investment in this service from external funding bodies such as the NIHR as it could be an environment for both research and developing new ways of working. DETAILS OF THE POST The Neurology service at UHB provides sub-specialist services in Multiple Sclerosis, Movement Disorders such as Parkinson's disease including Deep Brain Stimulation, Motor Neurone Disease, Epilepsy, Neuromuscular Diseases, Neuroimmunology and Headache. There is joint working across Neurosurgery, Trauma, Stroke, Neurophysiology and Neuropsychiatry. The Neurology team consists of 24.85 WTE consultants as well as support from Clinical Nurse Specialists and Physiotherapists. The speciality delivers outpatient-based activity which includes some procedure-based activity that takes place within the outpatients setting. Neurology has 36 inpatient beds on ward 411 that are used to provide both a regional tertiary service and local secondary care provision. The elective inpatient element delivered by Neurology consists of procedures carried out in several locations within the Trust for example: Intravenous immunoglobulin and infusion therapies delivered on a dedicated day case unit for neurology patients; muscle biopsy delivered in Welcome theatres; and a variety of procedures including lumbar punctures via Ambulatory Care Beds. Commitment to research including multi-centre trials and teaching is encouraged. This will be reflected in the SPA time and in the applicant's job plan. The University of Birmingham is located adjacent to the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital and an honorary appointment to the University will be available to an applicant with an active research interest.
