Summary
We are seeking a committed and experienced Criminal Duty Solicitor to join our Criminal Defence Team. The successful candidate will provide high-quality legal advice, representation, and advocacy for clients at police stations and magistrates' courts.
You will be responsible for managing your own caseload, attending clients at short notice, and participating in the out-of-hours duty solicitor rota.
Key Responsibilities:
· Provide legal representation for clients at the police station, including out-of-hours cover
· Attend and represent clients in Magistrates’ Court proceedings, including bail applications, plea hearings, trials, and sentencing
· Handle a varied criminal caseload including theft, assault, drugs offences, domestic violence, and public order offences
· Prepare legal documents, including briefs to counsel, witness statements, and case summaries
· Build strong relationships with clients, keeping them informed and supported throughout their case
· Ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency (LAA) requirements and maintain accurate records
· Liaise with third parties such as the police, probation services, CPS, and courts
· Contribute to the criminal department’s development and maintain up-to-date legal knowledge
· Supervise and support junior staff, trainees, or paralegals as required
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
· Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales) with a current Practicing Certificate.
· Accredited Duty Solicitor under the Legal Aid Agency’s Criminal Litigation Accreditation Scheme
· Proven experience in criminal defence work
· Strong advocacy skills and confident in court representation
· Excellent knowledge of criminal law and procedure
· Ability to work independently and manage a demanding workload
· Availability to participate in a 24/7 duty rota (including evenings/weekends)
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
Desirable Criteria:
Higher Rights of Audience (Criminal)
Experience with legal aid billing and case management software (e.g., Legal Aid Agency CCMS,SOS Connect)
Additional language skills
Experience in youth court or prison law
