Summary
The successful candidate will lead the strategy team responsible for the Government’s work to address the impact of the rapidly changing media sector, as audiences increasingly move to consume content and news online. These changes are having major impacts on society, democracy and the economy, and require DCMS to consider how the policy framework should keep pace.
As well as providing strategic leadership across all these issues, your team will have specific responsibilities for key areas of cross-cutting policy development. You will need to work closely with a wide range of other teams, including the Radio, Advertising and Press team, across government, Ofcom and wider stakeholders to successfully build a shared sense of purpose and cohesive work programme.
This is a stretching role, with the policy area attracting significant interest within government and from stakeholders, and will suit an individual excited by the prospect of being able to translate big issues facing society into a tangible programme of work and galvanise stakeholders into action.
Person specificationThe ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience:
Essential requirements:
- Leadership: Outstanding leadership skills, including developing teams with a strong team culture and ethos, and motivating colleagues across team boundaries to deliver a shared agenda on complex and challenging issues.
- Seeing the bigger picture: Significant experience understanding and analysing complex policy and delivery issues at pace; weighing up political, social and economic considerations; using your judgement to identify the most critical issues; and providing clear, strategic advice.
- Working together, and communicating and influencing: Strong stakeholder management and well developed communication skills, with the ability to build influential relationships internally and externally, and experience of delivering through others.
Desirable skills:
- Experience of working with Senior Officials and/or Ministers (or individuals of equivalent experience/status).
- Experience of working on strategy in a policy making environment.
- Knowledge or interest in working on media policy
If you do not hold this knowledge or experience, please do not be deterred from applying for the role.
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:
- Communicating and Influencing
- Leadership
- Seeing the Big Picture
- Working Together

The session will be an opportunity to hear more about the role, the team and wider directorate and the department. It will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions.
