Summary

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The appointee will be based at The Christie and will be complemented by Specialty Doctors, IMT deanery trainees and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP). The Oncology Critical Care Unit (OCCU) is a state-of-the-art eight-bedded facility. The critical care service complements a comprehensive range of cancer specialties including surgical, clinical, medical, and Haematological oncology. The unit delivers about 600 patient episodes per year; 60% of which are surgical. In addition, the post offers experience in clinical Anaesthesia, under immediate consultant supervision. Each day shift will commence with a handover and the post holder will be required to: Examine OCCU patients Present the patients to the consultant intensivist on the ward round when detailed management plans will be made The post holder will then be required to carry out those management plans Hand over the care of his/her patients to the person covering the unit for the night The OCCU resident is also a member of the cardiac arrest team and may be required to attend to acutely unwell patients outside the unit. During the day the OCCU resident works under direct supervision by the OCCU consultant; out-of- hours the OCCU consultant is on call from home. Duration and Monitoring of the Programme This fellowship is for 12 months. The post is available to commence in August 2025. The post is based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX. Educational supervision will be provided. Continuing Professional Development The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Although this is not a recognised training post, the following benefits are available: Trust and Departmental induction programmes Weekly departmental teaching sessions Experience and training in intensive care of adult cancer patients, including cardiovascular support, invasive CVS monitoring and mechanical ventilation. Regular time-tabled sessions in clinical anaesthesia for a wide range of oncological surgical procedures, often complex and requiring multidisciplinary input. The specialities involved include GI and colorectal surgery, urology, gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and hepato-biliary surgery. Anaesthetic services are also provided for brachytherapy and radiotherapy including proton beam treatment of paediatric patients. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential for the post Desirable for the post METHOD OF ASSESSMENT 1. ATTAINMENTS Educational Medical Degree AF Qualifications Full registration with GMC FRCA or its equivalent AF Professional Qualifications GMC registration CE 2. TRAINING Advanced Life Support Airway skills More advanced competencies in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive care medicine (ICM). AF/I 3. EXPERIENCE Job Specific At least 3 months experience in ICM and Anaesthesia. 3 years experience in Anaesthesia & Critical Care. AF Management / Audit Demonstrates understanding of the importance of audit and research. Evidence of active participation in clinical research / audit AF/I 4. PERSONAL SKILLS Good communication skills in verbal and written English Good interpersonal skills Working well in a multi- disciplinary team Calm, efficient under pressure Knowing when to ask for help To recognise personal limitations but to work competently within these boundaries Reliable, punctual, hard- working, enthusiastic.
