Summary
The Department There are 3 Consultant Breast Surgeons with 10 Consultant GI Surgeons together with Specialist Registrars, Core Surgical Trainees and Foundation Trainees. The department provides a wide range of in-patient and day case procedures and provides emergency and elective general surgery services as well as subspecialty services in Colorectal, Breast and Upper GI. We provide services to a population of approximately 260,000, nestled in the Heart of South Yorkshire. Fast track services are provided three days a week. The weekly Breast Cancer MDT is attended either virtually or in person by an Oncologist from the Oncology Team from Western Park Hospital Sheffield. Our Oncologists support tumour downsizing using neoadjuvant systemic therapy (chemotherapy or endocrine therapy) to facilitate breast conservation. The weekly Breast MDT is followed by a post biopsy and a post-surgery results clinic. Oncoplastic MDT with the surgical and nursing teams takes place on a weekly basis, for both pre and post-operative discussion of Oncoplastic and reconstructive cases. Post operatively, the more complex Oncoplastic/reconstructive surgical cases will be seen in our dedicated wound clinic for close follow up. Furthermore, patients undergoing surgery are seen in a pre-operative consent clinic slot to explore and confirm treatment plan. More than 95% of procedures are undertaken as a day surgery case. We provide benign breast surgery, simple wide local excisions, a wide range of Oncoplastic procedures and mastectomies with or without immediate reconstruction. Reconstructive techniques offered in house are implant based and LD reconstruction. Other autologous reconstruction techniques are offered in close collaboration with the Sheffield Teaching Hospital Plastic Surgery department. We offer sentinel lymph node biopsy, targeted axillary dissection and axillary lymph node clearance. Localisation techniques in the breast and axilla include, Magseed, Magtrace, radioisotope and/or Blue Dye. The unit participates in national and international clinical trials. We are recruiting to ATNEC, EndoNET and LOLIPOP. We plan to participate in the TADPOLE study. We provide nurse-led family history clinics in collaboration with the Sheffield Childrens Hospital Clinical Genetics Department. With the help of the Genetics Department we have successfully implemented fast track genetic testing on the R208 pathway. The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is a screening hub for the National Breast Screening Programme in the region.
