Applications are invited for the 1 year post of the Neurosurgical Functional and Epilepsy Fellow at Salford Royal Hospital of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) commencing in August 2025

The Neurosurgical Unit in the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences (MCCN) at Salford Royal Hospital has one of the largest and busiest Neurosurgery units in the country.

You would join this team with direct responsibility to the five functional neurosurgical consultants, working in conjunction with the rest of the neurosurgical team. Other subspecialties that are represented within the unit include complex spine, skull-base, oncology and vascular neurosurgery, giving you experience in a busy, well-established and highly-performing unit.

The post of Functional and Epilepsy Neurosurgery Fellow is designed as a 1 year post suitable for a senior neurosurgical trainee wishing to gain experience in this particular subspecialty.

It is envisaged as a post appropriate for someone prior to taking up a consultant post, in the UK or abroad, with an interest in Functional and Epilepsy Surgery.

The Fellowship in Functional and Epilepsy Neurosurgery at Salford Royal Hospital in Manchester provides a comprehensive hands-on training in stereotactic, functional and Epilepsy neurosurgery.

The Fellow will learn to
• Evaluate patients before surgery
• Plan surgical procedures and invasive electrode studies
• Perform surgical techniques, such as stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), resective and disconnective techniques, and neuromodulatory approaches
• Manage a range of epilepsy surgery cases for adults
• Map the brain functionally
• Resect tumours in eloquent cortex
• Use deep brain stimulation for movement disorders
• Place intra-thecal pumps
• Participate in research projects
• Work with specialists in movement disorders, epilepsy neurology, psychiatry, and neuropsychology

This is an active fellowship program whose objective is to train neurosurgeons to develop expertise in epilepsy and stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. The fellow will participate fully in the evaluation of patients in the outpatient clinic and will learn all aspects of surgical treatments.
