Summary

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED The timetable of commitments for junior trainees include operating sessions, Dressing Clinic sessions, sessions covering routine ward duties and pre-admission clinics, and local anaesthetic list, and out-patient session. The routine work includes care of acute and elective patients, attendance at theatre lists and out-patient clinics. The Plastic Surgery Unit has 18 adult beds, separate paediatric beds and beds on a dedicated High Dependency Unit. A daily dressing clinic with a separate Sister and staff also operates within the Unit. There are 21 general anaesthetic and 7 local anaesthetic lists per week. Both Leeds hospitals have busy Accident and Emergency Departments and general Plastic Surgery emergencies are referred to the Unit. The Unit takes acute hand emergencies on a rota with Orthopaedics and many trauma cases are treated as combined procedures with the Orthopaedic Surgeons. Outside of the main Unit at Leeds General Infirmary, Plastic Surgery out-patient clinics are held at St. Jamess University Hospital, which the Specialist Registrar will attend when working for different firms. In addition, combined clinics with appropriate departments are held in head and neck oncology, rheumatology, sarcoma, breast, melanoma, non melanoma skin cancer. A congenital hand service and brachial plexus injury service is also provided for the Region in addition to a craniofacial service. Close ties exist with Orthopaedic surgery, Gynaecology, General Surgery and Neurosurgery to provide reconstructive services for these specialities and there are links with the Maxillo-Facial Department enabling trainees to attend MDT cleft lip & palate clinics. The successful applicant will also have to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation, when practicable with his colleagues both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the profession and the Department of Health & Social Security that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY This will depend upon prior experience and can be discussed. It is expected that the levels of responsibility will be that of ST1 or above, and the successful candidate will receive supervision from a named consultant with responsibility to develop the individuals e-portfolio or equivalent.
