A Vacancy at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.


This is a Trust Resident doctor ST1 (MN35) post working within the integrated Cardiology Department, based at Watford General Hospital. The delivery of Cardiology Medicine is dependent upon high quality medical decision making and care.

In-patient cardiology services are based on the acute site at Watford General Hospital. Patients with a primary cardiological condition are admitted under the direct care of the Cardiology team. Regular ward rounds occur 7 days a week on our 2 main 12 bedded wards and front door support to the Acute Assessment Unit and Emergency Department Monday-Friday during working hours.


The Cardiology Medical team is made up of 12 consultants, 4 Trust specialty doctors (SpR level) and 3 Trust Cardiology SPR. The team are based in the AAU Level3/Cardiac Centre and are responsible for all cardiology patients post admission. There is an emphasis on multidisciplinary working with the nursing and therapy staff working within the unit.

This post is for fixed term till 31st March 2026, the first rotation will be in cardiology until 5th August 2025. The post holder will work under supervision of a consultant Cardiologist. During the period of the contract in this department doctors are expected to become competent at organising the day-to-day duties of this clinical area. The post-holder will be rostered to work within the acute medicine team and also contribute to the Medicine on-call rota.





Daily review of cardiology inpatients and ongoing care i.e performing relevant investigations, following up results, monitoring of patients, liaising with other specialities, communication with patients and families, completing discharge summaries etc.

Responsible for ensuring adequate clinical notes are made in accordance with good medical practice.

Resident doctors are required to perform duties over and above their contracted hours in occasional emergencies and in unforeseen circumstances, at the request of the Clinical Director of the service. It has been agreed with the profession and the Department of Health that these additional commitments are exceptional and juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for a prolonged period or on a regular basis.
