Do you care about the safety of products and want to protect people and places? Can we use your skills, knowledge and experience to enable UK business to thrive? If the answer is yes, then we would like to hear from you!
We are the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), part of the Department for Business & Trade (Previously the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy). We are here for the purpose of making regulation work to deliver real world impact. Regulation is a powerful Government tool to address market failures, influence behaviour and promote positive action. Crafted and delivered well, regulation can be an enabler of growth, innovation and efficiency.
Since early 2018 we have been building a positive and creative team that enjoys a position of influence and respect within an organisation that continues to grow, most recently with the addition of construction products regulation planned.
Our primary purpose is to protect people and places from product-related harm, ensuring consumers and businesses can buy and sell products with confidence

What We DoAt OPSS, science and engineering are central to our mission of protecting people and places. Our teams delve into product design, materials, and performance to identify hazards and develop robust safety standards. By understanding the science, we can anticipate risks, rigorously test products, and enforce regulations effectively, ensuring products are safe throughout their lifecycle.
Our Engineering Team includes engineers, scientists, and technical policy experts. We tackle challenges from mechanical and electrical engineering to legal metrology and construction products. Our work is central to OPSS's mission, providing the technical foundation for informed policymaking, effective enforcement and regulatory activities, and respond to incidents in all areas that OPSS holds policy or enforcement responsibility for.
From everyday items like e-scooters and gas hobs to the concrete in our cities' structures, our team is on the front line of providing technical advice for smart regulation. When these items fail, the consequences can be severe, both in human and economic terms.
We strive to prevent such costs by conducting in-depth research, developing testing protocols, and crafting advisory documents. We collaborate with other departments and organisations, overseeing technical aspects like designating standards and assessing the suitability of Conformity Assessment Bodies (CAB) for the UK. Our work goes beyond compliance; it's about protecting lives and building trust in the marketplace and supporting business.

As a Technical Policy Specialist at OPSS, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring product safety and regulatory compliance. Your expertise will be crucial in addressing complex product safety issues and supporting the development of effective policies. We are seeking two individuals to lead the specialist technical work within the commissioning and delivery of product testing, one role will be focussed on consumer products, the other on construction products.
