Summary

The Judicial Pay and Pensions Policy Unit is one of five Deputy Director led units in the Judicial and Legal Services Policy Directorate, in the Ministry of Justice.

Our directorate plays a unique and pivotal role in managing the complex and vital interaction between the Government and the Judiciary. This includes supporting the Lord Chancellor in fulfilling her constitutional responsibilities and working in partnership with the judiciary.

The Judicial Pay and Pensions Deputy Director has responsibility for ensuring the remuneration and terms and conditions policy for judges is effective. This policy needs to meet legal and constitutional requirements, be affordable within the wider departmental and public finances and be sufficiently attractive to ensure that the judiciary maintains the highest standards for which it is rightly recognised and respected.

This is a crucial time for judicial pay policy, with a Major Review of judicial pay having been commissioned by the Lord Chancellor.

We are looking for someone with strong leadership skills, able to set direction, motivate and work collaboratively with a range of partners within and outside of the department to deliver their objectives. You will have strong communication skills, both in person and in writing, and the ability to manage competing priorities and make tangible progress across a number of different areas.
You will:

Lead on judicial pay and expenses policy, including the departmental lead on the Major Review of judicial pay being undertaken by the Senior Salaries Review Body, agreeing annual judicial pay increases and leading a range of pay policy reform projects.
Lead on shaping and progressing a more strategic approach to judicial ‘workforce-related’ policy issues - engaging with policy and operational colleagues to agree with the judiciary and Ministers their strategic priorities in this space, whilst respecting their specific responsibilities.
Lead on judicial pension policy including policy input to operational programmes remedying previous litigation and delivering secondary legislation to maintain the effectiveness of the pension schemes.
Manage the departmental response to a range of litigation brought by judicial office holders in relation to aspects of their pay, pensions and terms and conditions, with significant financial and operational implications.
Provide strong leadership for approximately 20 staff, organised under two (Grade 6-led/Head of Policy) sub-teams.
Manage your allocated budget effectively and ensure that the unit continues to be staffed with high quality colleagues.
Contribute to the wider corporate landscape in the MoJ and, as part of the JLSP senior leadership team, lead on an area of corporate work on behalf of the Directorate (or Policy Group) and have collective responsibility of corporate issues and decisions which impact the directorate.
