Summary
The purpose of this role is to perform day to day management of a team of technicians and coordinators, completing the preparation of samples prior to laboratory analysis. Drive the continuous development/improvement of staff and processes to uphold and increase sample throughput.
Please note this is a fixed term contract ending in approximately June 2026. Working 37.5 hours per week - Monday to Friday 07:00 till 15:00.
Complete the preparation of samples in accordance with standard operating procedures and in accordance with standards of quality and the requirements of ISO17025.
Train technicians in all preparation methods to a level of competence and productivity.
Line management of the Preparation Technicians, Team Coordinator and Trainer including providing support, absence monitoring, KPI reporting/one to one reviews, maintenance of training records and objective setting.
Daily work scheduling ensuring there is suitable cover for the department at all times.
Support the Department Manager in the continuous improvement of preparation methods, driving improved ways of working to increase productivity and efficiency whilst meeting customer needs.
Support the Department Manager in achieving daily targets and KPI’s.
Participating in the recruitment of technicians and monitoring/documenting progress over probationary periods.
Investigate delayed samples and provide updates on progress to internal teams and external clients. Implementing processes to reduce occurrence.
Work to investigate and resolve customer queries and complaints in a timely manner in line with company policy.
Ensure staff are kept up to date with any changes within the business.
Maintain stock levels of consumable items for methods being undertaken.
Ensuring equipment/fixtures are maintained and suitable for use at all times.
Deputise for Department Manager as required during periods of absence and annual leave.
Responsible for ensuring that UK Health and Safety legislation is maintained and helping to ensure the working environment is kept in a clean and tidy manner.
Ensure personal protective clothing and equipment is worn in accordance with the Health & Safety policy and stock levels maintained.
Provide a high level of internal and external customer care via all communication methods.
Qualifications
A Levels or equivalent, degree in science related subject would be advantageous.
Experience in a Team Leader or Supervisory position.
Strong knowledge of UKAS requirements, particularly ISO 17025 and 9001.
Working laboratory experience and experience with LIMS based systems
Strong people management skills.
Experience with NCW/RCCA/complaint handling
Competence in IT, particularly Microsoft Office suite.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate both internally and with external clients.
Excellent organisational skills with great attention to detail.
Critical thinking and ability to problem solve.
Self motivated and ability to motivate others.
Experience with 5S and continuous improvement.
