Your role and responsibilities
As our Definitive Map Officer you’ll process legal orders from start to finish, initially public path orders, possibly also definitive map modification orders in the future.
Using mapping software you’ll prepare consultation and order maps and update the digital working copy definitive map.
You may need to write and present reports to the Development and Regulation Committee seeking authority to make legal orders and you will submit objected orders to the Planning Inspectorate and arrange local public inquiries.
In collaboration with Rights of Way and Access colleagues you’ll progress green access enhancement schemes to improve the access network, in line with local and national priorities. You will seek to build partnerships with communities, agencies and other councils.

You will need
- to be able to understand and apply access legislation
- great communication skills in person and in writing, as you will be dealing with land managers, user groups and the public, and presenting committee reports
- a degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline/or equivalent experience.

The team
The Rights of Way and Access team looks after the county council’s green access network. Green access includes 5,700km of public rights of way, open access and informal routes. Suffolk County Council’s ‘Suffolk Green Access Strategy 2020-2030’ covers the team’s main priorities with the vision “to get more people using and enjoying Suffolk’s green access network.”.
The Definitive Map Team sits within Rights of Way and Access. We maintain the county council's definitive map and associated records and make legal orders to improve the network.
