The post will be based within the council’s Advice Shop, which is part of the Anti-Poverty Service. The Advice Shop is a free, impartial and confidential service to help the people of West Lothian with a focus to alleviate poverty, promote inclusion and equality through advice, assistance and advocacy in the areas of welfare benefits, housing, energy and money advice.

The post holder will work to promote income maximisation and alleviate poverty through advice and advocacy in the areas of welfare benefits/appeals, debt/housing and energy advice by being the first point of contact for those looking for assistance and support. This role will support the key priorities and actions outlined within West Lothian’s Tackling Poverty Strategy in particular improving access to advice.

This post is key to ensuring that West Lothian residents are able to maximise their incomes and access all their financial entitlements allowing them to build financial capability and resilience. This role will also be key to referring on for additional support from other agencies who work across West Lothian.

The post holder will be responsible for delivering advice to all West Lothian residents and work alongside a range of key community planning partners to ensure that the customer is at the centre of a high-quality advice service.

Empathy, listening skills and understanding are vital to excel in this role. You will also advocate on behalf of customers with other Council services and third-party organisations, good communication skills are vital for this role.
