Main duties

The wonderful Dickens House Museum, situated in the picturesque town of Broadstairs and dedicated to the life of Charles Dickens celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer. The Council is looking for someone to lead on the day to day running of the house with a team of hardworking and friendly volunteers on a fixed term contract, on annualised hours basis.

The council is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a genuine interest in Dickens and leading a group of friendly volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the Dickens House Museum. The museum currently attracts in the region of 8,000 visitors per year and due to the retirement of the Curator and caretaker, we are looking to recruit someone for the role of Dickens House Museum Visitor Manager.

Working closely with the Tourism and Visitor Information Team who will support the post holder to ensure the successful opening of the house to visitors including group visits.

The role will include developing relationships with with the Broadstairs Dickens Fellowship, Dickens Festival, Dickens House in London and other town groups


Tasks will include

Oversee the smooth operation of the museum on a day to day basis, including opening and closing up, covering any shortfalls in the rota ensuring that the museum operates to the advertised opening times.
Oversee the taking of entrance fees and selling to stock using an EPOS till system
Manage the recruitment, training and rota for volunteers
Responsible for stock control and sales of merchandise with support from the Visitor Information Service Team
To ensure the daily record sheet is completed and the weekly waybill for cash collection
Be able to coordinate and facilitate group visits with volunteers support
Ensure that displays and collections in the House are shown to their best advantage
Carry out weekly/monthly health and safety checks and recording data on the house
Ensure health and safety requirements are in place and volunteers are aware of policies and procedures.
We are looking for someone with experience of:

Working in a similar role - in attractions, museum or visitor environment
Proven track record of working and managing volunteers
Working with EPOS till system including reconciliation
Experience in assessing and managing risk
