The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) has an exciting opportunity within the Specialist Hip and Knee Unit to appoint one full time (10 PAs) fixed term locum consultant surgeon to start as soon as possible, this will initially be an 8 month post.

As part of the Specialist Hip and Knee Unit you will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive care and highly specialised surgical management. In addition, you will undertake audit, research and quality improvement work to ensure ongoing commitment to patient safety and clinical quality.

You are expected to be fellowship trained in hip and knee arthroplasty. We are looking for applicants who work well within a team and have relevant experience in the management of complex joint reconstruction of the hip and knee. You will also have good communication skills and experience in multidisciplinary team working. We aim to enable a sustainable service which is well governed, prioritises patient experience and focuses on patient outcomes and research.

The appointment is for a full time locum Consultant Surgeon in Specialist Hip & Knee.

The appointee will:
• Be on a full time 10 PA job plan. There will be 8.5 Direct Clinical Care Programmed Activities sessions and 1.5 Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA). These will comprise of ward rounds, theatre sessions, planning meetings, procedures, MDTs and outpatient clinic appointments.
• Provide in-patient and out-patient medical, surgical and rehabilitation care to patients.
• The unit has a commitment to uphold our teaching element. The appointed consultant will play their full part in continuing and extending teaching within the unit
• The new Consultant is expected to have a varied range of clinical interests to compliment the skills of the existing consultant team in the department, the development of which will be supported.
• Job plans will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant.
• The post is at the grade of Consultant and will be appointed on the Terms and conditions of the new consultant contract agreed nationally.
• The successful candidate will have access to a computer and office space. Clerical support is shared amongst the consultant body.

This Specialist Hip and Knee unit has become established as one of the leading units for hip and knee replacements in the United Kingdom.

The unit aims to provide a tertiary service for patients with complex problems of the hip and knee which cannot be provided elsewhere. It will see patients with adverse or poor outcomes from elsewhere and offer a safe haven for disappointed patients. However, by maintaining a routine orthopaedic practice for the local population, the surgeons will continue to provide excellent training for the surgeons of tomorrow.



The division also works with the bone infection service and operates in collaboration with the Royal Free microbiology/infectious diseases department. The model of care in the Bone Infection Unit is multidisciplinary and aims to mirror the Oxford bone infection unit. At present the unit has close attachments with the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science and University College London.

There is a close working relationship between the specialist hip and knee unit, limb reconstruction and spinal Orthopaedic surgeons and infectious diseases physicians’ co-ordinating the medical aspects of care. This service is dedicated to the investigation and treatment of patients with all aspects of bone and joint infection.

The Specialist Hip & Knee Unit has nine [9] Consultant Surgeons.

There is a requirement for job planned clinical work on the weekend. This will be held on a Saturday on alternate months or you have the option to annualise your Saturday sessions to 6 all-day lists per year. We value our staff’s wellbeing and we will work with you to be flexible to your personal/family needs and the needs of the service. Week day commitments will be adjusted to account for job planned weekend working including adequate rest breaks. The Trust has the provision in place for the required support services to be rostered for weekend working.
