Job Title: Trading Standards Officer

Location: Westmorland, Kendal

Rate: £45

Job Type: Part-time, Temporary

Accommodation/Travel Expenses: Mileage only.

Job Summary: As a Trading Standards Officer (TSO), you will play a crucial role in protecting consumers and businesses by ensuring a fair and safe trading environment. You will enforce laws related to consumer protection, investigate complaints, and take action against illegal trading practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine inspections and investigations of local businesses to ensure compliance with trading standards laws.
  • Investigate consumer complaints and take appropriate enforcement action, including prosecution if necessary.
  • Test and verify the accuracy of weighing and measuring equipment used in trade.
  • Ensure the safety and correct labelling of products, including food, electrical goods, and other consumer items.
  • Provide advice and guidance to businesses on compliance with trading standards regulations.
  • Collaborate with other agencies, such as the police and HM Revenue & Customs, to tackle issues like commercial fraud and counterfeiting.
  • Prepare and present evidence in court for prosecution cases.
  • Educate consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities through talks, reports, and written materials.
  • Keep up to date with changes in legislation and best practices in trading standards.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold statutory professional qualification including Food Standards & Weight and measures.

  • 3 years post qualification experience of an enforcement role within Trading Standards.
  • qualifications and experience in enforcement or regulatory roles.
  • Strong analytic and investigative skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in using computer software for report writing and data analysis.
  • A valid driving license is required for site visits.

Working Conditions:

  • 22 Hours a week.
  • Work environments may include offices, client premises, and courtrooms.
