Summary
This is a Fixed Term post for 2 years working full-time.
This innovative and exciting scheme provides an excellent career opportunity for newly qualified or established General Practitioners who want to gain knowledge and experience in medical education and research. In addition to the competitive salary, there is funding available for successful applicants to pursue higher qualifications in their field of interest and also to attend / present at conferences. From the opportunities offered by the scheme, previous Fellows have been enabled to establish a portfolio career, combining GP work with medical education, research or both.
The role provides a prime opportunity to join Swansea University Medical School, which is a Top 5 UK Medical School (Times Good University Guide 2023). The School ranks 1st in the UK for Research Environment and 2nd for Overall Research Quality (Research Excellence Framework 2014-2021).
Full time Academic Fellows will be based in Swansea University Medical School for three days a week where, with guidance, they can explore some of the extensive teaching and research opportunities that exist. For the other two days, they will be based in a GP practice (in Hywel Dda, Powys or Swansea Bay Health Boards). Over these two practice days, three sessions will be devoted to clinical work and one session will be reserved for the Fellow to develop services and systems that may improve patient care for the local population. Part time Fellows will have their time allocated according to their individual requirements. For example, a Fellow working 60% FTE will be based in the University for two days a week and the remaining day in the GP Practice.
This is a fixed term post for two years; Fellows will be based for one year in different practices (i.e. two practices during the programme). Practices are appraised by the Programme Directors before and after a Fellow is placed there and potential placements will be discussed with the successful applicants before allocation.
The posts are likely to commence in January 2025, but the starting date is flexible. Applicants wishing to pursue the Fellowship scheme on a less than full time basis are encouraged to apply.
