q Qualifications & Experience

q Qualified teacher with a strong background in working with pupils with special needs

q Experience / training in working with pupils in either the primary or secondary phases

q Successful experience of working with other specialisms and agencies

q Additional Qualification in Special Educational Needs

q Experience of teaching PSHE to pupils with SEN

q Additional qualification in PSHE

q Ability to work effectively as part of a team and plan jointly

q Ability to work with other Heads of PSHE from local schools (mainstream and special)

q Commitment to undertaking a detailed induction programme

q Commitment to undertake additional training relevant to the post

q Firm understanding of the subject in relation to pupils with special needs

q Sound literacy and numeracy skills

q Ability to make use of ICT to support pupils’ learning

q Able to confidently and competently apply knowledge and skills acquired from training into a practical context, in and outside formal classroom settings

q Good planning and organisational skills

q Ability to motivate and encourage pupils

q Membership of, or willingness to join, the PSHE Association

Further details about the role

Whole school responsibility for teaching and learning in PSHE. This will include:

q Development of subject policies and planning across the school in accordance with agreed practice and taking into account current government policy. This will include how the subject contributes to pupils’ development in SMSC

q Work in partnership with the schools ‘Therapeutic Thinking’ team to ensure that the PSHE and SRE curriculum take account of advice and strategies

q Work in partnership with the schools DSL’s, Heads of Strands, curriculum leads and Pastoral Team to ensure that Safeguarding is integrated throughout the PSHE and SRE curriculum and is delivered

q To ensure PSHE and RSE are effectively taught across the school

q Ensuring, through monitoring of teaching, planning and recording in the subject across the school, that teachers regularly evaluate pupils’ achievements in the subject with a view to improving standards in PSHE. This will include ensuring teachers monitor pupil progress using agreed school procedures including moderation of pupils’ work

q Ensure the development and effective promotion of PSHE in all subjects across the curriculum through regular audits

q Identify in consultation with Strands / Departments appropriate resources for use across the school and in doing so ensure that the budget available is used in an efficient and effective manner

q Use own subject expertise to develop teaching expertise across the school in the subject

q Ensure that school responds to national initiatives / days in an appropriate and relevant manner

q Work with Curriculum Centre Co-ordinator / Administrator to ensure good provision of subject specific materials

q Attend training in the subject and provide CPD to whole staff or smaller groups of staff in the subject

q Work with Head of ICT to ensure clear, consistent teaching and learning is taking place across ICT and PSHE / RSE

q Ensure that Brookfields School is ready to implement compulsory ‘Relationships Education’ in the Primary School and ‘Relationships and Sex Education’ in the secondary school in accordance with government guidance

q Work in partnership with other Heads of PSHE, for example through attendance at West Berkshire PSHE network meetings

q Monitor impact of PSHE / RSE teaching through short and long term outcomes

q Work with lead professionals in the local and national area

q In partnership with Heads of Strands and Curriculum leads, review, update and write PSHE curriculum and schemes of work

q Work with the other teams within the school, eg Pastoral and FSW, to ensure a multi-disciplinary approach takes place to support the pupils at Brookfields School
