Summary

The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University ranks 3rd in the world for Linguistics, according to the 2024 QS World University Rankings, and consists of a vibrant and supportive community of scholars. https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/linguistics/

The Department seeks to appoint a Senior Research Associate in Dynamical Modelling of Spoken Language to work full-time for 10 months. The postdoctoral researcher will work with Principal Investigator Dr Sam Kirkham on a UKRI-funded project on the dynamics of speech production. The position is available from 1 November 2024, but a flexible start date is possible until 1 December 2024.

You will have a PhD in Linguistics, Psychology, Physics, or a related area (or, if the PhD has not yet been awarded, it must have been submitted by 1 October 2024). You should have a track-record of conference presentations and publications commensurate with your career stage. You should have experience in applied dynamical systems (e.g. biological systems, social systems, neuroscience, synergetics, speech dynamics), plus experience in at least one of the following two areas:

  • Theoretical models of speech production (specifically Articulatory Phonology / Task Dynamics)
  • Computational neuroscience (e.g. neural mass/field models, dynamic field theory)

You will conduct research on dynamical models of the neural processes behind speech production and sound change, using experimental data and computational models. You will also assist in the development of software for data analysis and modelling, as well as preparing documentation for public release of software. Further information on publications relating to the project can be found at: https://samkirkham.github.io/publications/

You will benefit from being a member of Lancaster’s Phonetics Lab, which is an internationally-renowned research group with world-leading laboratory facilities. Lancaster University is highly ranked and research-led. The University is an excellent place to work, offering generous benefits and sabbatical entitlements. The historic city of Lancaster has a thriving arts and cultural scene. The North West of England offers high standards of living, beautiful countryside, including the Lake District, and excellent national and international transport connectivity.
