Summary
We are seeking a full-time (8 PA) Locum Consultant to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team, which has undergone significant growth in the last decade. The department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for individuals with appropriate skills to complement this team and help build the Paediatric Plastic Surgery Service to be in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.
The post-holder will be expected to work independently in out-patient clinics, elective and emergency operating. The department sees:
General Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
• General Plastics Soft Tissue Trauma and Hand Trauma
• Surgery for skin and subcutaneous lesions and tumours (including neurofibromatosis)
• Scar management (keloids, post trauma, contractures)
• Congenital breast/chest wall anomalies and gynaecomastia
Complex Plastic Surgery
• Congenital and acquired hand and upper limb deformities (Polydactyly, Syndactyly, Macrodactyly, absent digits)
• Congenital and acquired ear deformities (Microtia, Prominence)
• Combined Facial Palsy Clinic
• Vascular anomalies service and birth marks (CMN) including laser treatment
• OrthoPlastic Clinics for complex upper and lower limb deformities
The main duties are to work kindly and efficiently within our established team of professionals to provide high quality care to all our patients/families. To collaborate with clinical, academic and non-clinical staff to ensure all the pillars of Governance are maintained and improved upon (i.e. audit/research/education & training/risk management etc).
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is made up of two of London's best known teaching hospitals and employs over 13,000 staff and has over 2 million patient contacts a year. Our annual turnover is now £1.2 billion.
The Evelina Children's Hospital is a purpose-built Children's hospital opened in 2005, bringing together existing Children's services at St Thomas' and Guy's Hospitals onto one site. As part of King's Health Partners, we are now one of the UK's first Academic Health Sciences Centres aiming to bring together world class teaching, research and clinical services.The new Children's Day Surgery Unit has now opened in July 2023. This purpose built unit has two operating theatres and will be open six days a week once fully operational and is an expansion of Evelina London's theatre capacity, allowing us to treat up to an additional 2,300 patients a year. The newly built unit is housed within a new five storey building adjacent to the main Evelina London Children's Hospital, allowing us to expand our children's services.
The post holder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years) and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Your job plan is anticipated to contain 8 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week on average to be carried out on Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust sites and includes on-call commitments. This is an outline programme and you will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including your personal and professional objectives with your Line Manager/Clinical Director upon your start date.

This includes asking certain groups of staff to work more flexibly so that we can offer services to patients in the evenings and at weekends. We regard this flexibility as essential if we are to continue to provide first class patient care in the future. As a result, any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern of working in the future if required and in accordance with the provisions of the new Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust consultant contract.
The job plan will be negotiated between the consultant and their Line Manager/Clinical Director at least annually for permanent or extended posts.
Direct Clinical Care Activities
• The post holder will hold a number of Paediatric Plastic Surgery outpatient clinics per week
• The post holder will assist in the management of Paediatric Plastic Surgery trauma patients/cases
• The post holder will offer to cross cover theatre and procedure room lists when other consultants are on annual leave and will help work through the current waiting lists with the current group of surgeons.
• The post holder will develop some one stop treatment clinics and support the needs clinics for children in the transition age group
• The post holder will conduct routine ward rounds and will lead a teaching ward round with the junior staff
Other Programmed Activities
• The post holder will be expected to be involved in the teaching programme in the department, including teaching mornings, audit and core skill training
