Summary

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink.

We are Strategy Group Business Management Team. We provide resourcing, finance, corporate, business improvement and Senior Leader support to two of Defra’s six core operating groups. It’s fair to say our senior leaders do amazing things because of the work we do in the background.

We’re looking for a Senior Business Officer in our Senior Leader Support team. You’ll be enabling a Director to deliver their jobs as effectively as possible by prioritising their time and shaping their agenda.

As part of this we're now recruiting a Senior Business Officer to join a cross-cutting team providing important services and support to the Group. This is a permanent position and as part of the role you’ll undertake a Business Administration Apprenticeship at Level 3. This is the academic equivalent of two ‘A’ Levels. We will enrol you onto the apprenticeship shortly after you join, and it will typically take 18 months + 3 months to complete the End Point Assessment. On successful completion of the apprenticeship your employment will continue with us.

Encouraging diverse applicants

We recognise the challenges that people with (multiple) protected characteristics may experience on the job market and in their career progression. We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups.

Supporting a director, you will be required to display high levels of judgement, demonstrating initiative and a proactive approach, often representing the business in dealing with senior stakeholders on high profile and sensitive matters under considerable pressure.

You will play a key part in supporting the Director to deliver on their priorities and the wider objectives. The role will support the Director and the Senior Leadership Team in shaping and running the directorate, ensuring an effective and efficient business is being delivered.

This is a fast-paced and dynamic role directly supporting the Director, and their senior team on a broad range of issues, including close working with the wider business management team for the assurance and governance of the directorate.
