Summary

Role Responsibilities 1. Maintains professional behaviour at all times and promotes a positive image of CWHFT, in line with Trust values. 2. Assists in the monitoring and maintenance of the health, safety and security of self and others in work area. The post holder must ensure that he/ she works within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trust procedures for safe working practices. 3. Demonstrates a commitment to continued personal development. 4. Maintain and manage records and reports. 5. Recognises and respond to emergencies appropriately, adult and neonatal basic life support. Is able to initiate fundamental care during an emergency situation to ensure safety. Demonstrates ability to locate and transport emergency equipment and is able to use as appropriate. 6. Is able to support individuals to be independent with their individual personal care needs and provide education where required to actively promote maintenance of hygiene. Takes measures to prevent cross infection in accordance with local policy. 7. Is able to recognise signs of a thriving baby and aware of public health issues and provide parents with appropriate information. Is able to support parents in their parenting skills as required. 8. Demonstrates an awareness of child protection and domestic abuse care pathways and policies with an awareness of factors that might alert him/her to the possibility of a child protection or domestic abuse issue and able to cite appropriate response to these concerns. 9. Post-holder is aware that their role includes exposure to biohazards and other potentially unpleasant materials and takes responsibility for protecting themselves and others where appropriate through implementation of measures such as universal precautions and equipment/material supplied by their employer for such use. Clinical Practice 1. Understands the importance of the woman as the centre of the health care system. Demonstrates that he/ she consult and involves women in decisions about their care and wellbeing. Demonstrates understanding of fundamental legal practices related to consent and the prevention of abuse. 2. Under the supervision of a midwife is able to plan and implement holistic, culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgemental care for women with a wide range of care needs. Undertakes other care practices as directed by the Midwife, but is able to carry out routine care duties at own discretion. Practices in accordance with the Trusts protocols and guidelines. 3. Undertakes specific clinical skills under the supervision of a midwife as appropriate to the clinical area. 4. Is able to support the woman with infant feeding and provide immediate care of newborn following the birth. Is able to provide instruction to the mother on how to hand express if necessary. 5. Displays analytical and judgement skills, within own sphere of practice, related to womens comfort, mobility, support needs. Uses initiative when responding to changes in the woman or babys condition. 6. Displays excellent two way communication with women, families and colleagues. Is able to overcome barriers to understanding when the womans first language is not English or has a learning or hearing difficulty. Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and ability to challenge others when the rights of women and others may be infringed 7. Participates in recording observations under the indirect supervision of the midwife, ensuring these are accurately recorded and reported. Managerial 1. Works as an effective team member. Understands the importance of team working in the delivery of high quality care. Demonstrates excellent two-way communication with women, their families and the maternity team. 2. Actively promotes diversity, including race diversity, and to maintaining an environment where there is equal opportunity and commitment to anti-discriminatory, anti-racist and anti-stereotyping practices. 3. Works with team to maintain high standards of cleanliness in the clinical area. Assist with non-clinical activities to ensure the smooth running of the service. 4. Supports the Senior Midwives and Matron to ensure the service practices within Data Protection/ Confidentiality/ Caldicott principles Education and Research 1. To participate in the research opportunities within the Trust 2. To support, join, and maintain an environment where education and change can flourish. 3. To engage with appropriate practice supervisors and practice assessors, ensuring that learning opportunities are effectively utilised. 4. To join the research awareness by, looking at appropriate evidence-based and research findings relevant to the clinical practice area. To keep the Head of Nursing, Professional Practice and Standards, informed of any new nursing research proposals, and on the progress of research studies approved by the Trust R&D and Ethics Committees. 5. To participate in inter-professional learning Financial 1. To make effective use of available resources and eliminate waste in order to contribute to the cost effective delivery of services. General 1. To help support and maintain the Trusts policy on Record Keeping and IG. 2. To manage own time to ensure balance between clinical and university activities. 3. To ensure own mandatory training certificates are current. 4. To participate in reflective practice, and maintain the Practice Assessment Documents 5.
