This post supports the work of both the Reagent Production Unit (RPU) and Cell and Tissue Culture Unit (CTC).
In RPU, the role is to maintain supply and production of a wide range of immunological reagents including, antibodies, antigens and kits for use in APHA laboratories and for commercial sale. To assist with test validation and troubleshooting reagents.
In CTC, the job holder will be involved with the preparation of cell cultures and immunological reagents in support of surveillance, research and disease response at APHA and for commercial customers. The main part of the job will be the preparation of primary cell cultures from a variety of animal tissues, this will involve dissection of animal organs and occasional attendance at animal postmortem.
To manage reagent production in RPU4 ensuring stocks of reagents are maintained, are fit-for-purpose and of high quality, initiating production and testing when new stock is required. Ensure the ISO9001:2015 quality system is supported with production records, datasheets and test summaries and associated documents maintained.
To ensure that reagent orders for the RPU4 workgroup are supplied using the stock management system (Integra), meeting the agreed turnaround times for internal and external orders. Dealing with enquires, complaints and non-conformance issues related to reagent products.
To assist in the validation of new diagnostic assays produced by commercial companies and in-house tests, assisting in the organisation and completion of practical work specific to test validation projects.
To assist in the completion of ad-hoc project work and to assist in trouble shooting tests.
Maintain the smooth running of the laboratory, ensuring room officer duties are completed and managing the equipment servicing and calibration on behalf of the unit.
To maintain a safe working environment in accordance with local safety standards and COSHH regulations, including the regular review of risk assessments and standard operating procedures.
Procurement of laboratory supplies using Oracle SOP.
Functional management of AO staff.
To work flexibly within Biotechnology and Lab Testing if required to ensure continuity of work.
Cell and Tissue Culture – Laboratory Manager
Production of primary cell cultures from a variety of animal tissues, this will involve dissection of animal organs and occasional attendance at animal postmortem.
Production of chick/embryo primary cultures.
Production of a variety of established cell lines and associated media.
Routine monitoring of cell cultures for infection with mycoplasma, bacteria and fungi.
Knowledge of animal anatomy and dissection skills desirable but training will be given.
The maintenance of manual and computerised records in accordance with ISO 9001:2015.
To participate in the maintenance of the laboratory and its equipment such as routine cleaning and ensuring equipment is serviced and calibrated.
