Summary
The CTO – Field Army will be responsible for supporting the Field Army in the seamless integration of software, hardware and network systems to enhance our operational effectiveness, including the rapid procurement of existing, mature technologies. The role requires a blend of technical knowledge and strategic problem-solving skills to reduce bureaucratic drag, coupled with the ability to work across organisation boundaries to orchestrate the delivery of our technological ecosystem of today with the need to ensure it integrates with the ecosystem of the future.
Effective communication of complex ideas to a range of stakeholders will be essential, as will be the ability to maintain a collaborative environment that utilises the strengths of our people to achieve and position the Army of today with the technology to win the fight. This role demands a proactive leader who can influence and coach senior stakeholders, mentor teams, manage complex projects, and foster an environment of continuous improvement.
Joining at a pivotal time for the British Army, the post holder as the technical authority, will be expected to contribute to a compelling technical vision and roadmap within the Field Army ensuring delivery of the Field Army’s strategic objectives aligned to the Army’s Digital and Data Plan, and MOD digital strategies. They will take on the responsibility of overseeing the development and dissemination of information technology to ensure that both business-as-usual and technological innovation is taken forward appropriately and responsibly across the Army enterprise – both in the home and deployed space. This role will also contribute to the Army’s new Land Systems Integration Laboratory, the end-to-end digital platform that will accelerate the exploitation of digital systems to the Field Army.
As a senior leader within the Army’s CTO function, the post holder will work with stakeholders across the Army, Defence, Whitehall, Allies and others, seeking opportunities for cooperation, collaboration, and innovation to improve the organisation and contribute to the goal of a digitally enabled Army.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Develop and lead the implementation of the Field Army’s technology strategy as part of the Field Army Command Plan.
In conjunction with commanders and operators, evaluate the Field Army’s range of technologies and which technologies it needs, proposing recommendations and solutions for rapid implementation.
Support the doubling of the Fd Army’s lethality through the rapid delivery of the ‘Top Ten’ targets including developing high-capacity digital communications across all echelons, increasing direct and indirect fire effects and enhancing multidomain integration.
Establish a technology architecture that provides a reliable and permanent infrastructure, including systems and services that are continuously operational and resistant to attacks or disasters.
Enable the organisation to be innovative and adopt new technologies at pace by ensuring people have the tools, technical skills and working environment they need.
