Summary
We have an exciting opportunity within our multi-disciplinary team for a Site Principal Nuclear Medicine Technologist/Radiographer. We are looking for an individual who is professional and caring, who is ambitious and forward-thinking, and who is keen to help develop our service and our staff, so that our Nuclear Medicine service exceeds the expectations of our patients.

You will be required to safely and effectively lead all aspects of the Nuclear Medicine Imaging service, which consists of six gamma cameras situated over two sites in addition to three DEXA units. You will ensure the delivery and acquisition of high-quality diagnostic images and data for all nuclear medicine procedures, whilst taking responsibility for directing workload and providing technical and professional advice at your designated site.
HCPC registration as a Radiographer, or registration with an appropriate PSA-accredited register (for example, the RCT or AHCS) as a Clinical Technologist specialising in Nuclear Medicine is essential and must be clearly stated in your application.

The post holder will perform all diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures on patients of all ages, who are suffering from a wide range of illnesses including life threatening conditions and terminal illnesses, requiring empathy and skills to help patients through difficult and complex procedures.
You will be required to manage and support all members of the Nuclear Medicine Technologist/Radiographer team, including conducting personal development reviews and providing pastoral support. You will supervise students and trainees from a wide variety of backgrounds, and encourage the highest professional and technical standards in all staff by role modelling excellence and providing constructive supervision. You will demonstrate partnership in professional development issues maintaining a high level of professional, technical and theoretical skills through personal CPD.
You will act as a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) and will participate in the governance of the Nuclear Medicine department in areas including risk management, health and safety, research and audit activities. You will manage workflow and ensure all data inputs are recorded for both patient records integrity and statistical evaluation purposes.
The Nuclear Medicine Service is one of the largest in the country with revenue streams of approximately £6.5M, a dedicated workforce of around 55 WTE, and an international reputation for teaching, research and professional development. The department is located over two sites and currently has six gamma cameras (including three hybrid imaging scanners), three DEXA scanners and an onsite Radiopharmacy.
The Nuclear Medicine team is a large, multidisciplinary workforce and comprises of individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and expertise. The department strives to provide excellence in all Nuclear Medicine procedures, and our work is carried out in a mutually supportive atmosphere where we can use our combined knowledge to always put our patients first.
Clinical Responsibilities:
1. To expertly perform and oversee all clinical Nuclear Medicine procedures at designated sites and to operate all types of Nuclear Medicine equipment and computing systems used in the department.
2. To perform all diagnostic & therapeutic procedures with due regard for Health & safety of self, patients and staff.
3. To undertake administration of diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals and drugs used in the practice of Nuclear Medicine as drescribed in the legislation and SOP’s, and to be able to perform acquisition and analysis of all in-vitro procedures in the laboratory.
4. To provide oversight of the Nuclear Cardiology service in order to ensure all aspects of the service are of the highest standard.
5. To expertly perform all aspects of Cardiac exercise and pharmacological stress testing.
6. To provide a link with paediatric service to facilitate the highest quality Paediatric Nuclear Medicine service.
7. To be accountable for the adherence to all standard operating procedures, protocols and guidelines by junior members of staff and students.
8. To be responsible for reviewing protocols and identifying opportunities to standardise practice across sites.
9. To respond to scheduling demands from patients and referrers for all nuclear medicine studies in accordance with departmental protocols.
10.To assess patient and referrer requirements and adapt procedures to ensure individual needs of each patient are met.
11.To take responsibility for patient consent, identification and ensure relevant clinical details are obtained prior to commencement of imaging, in accordance with Trust and professional legislation.
12.To ensure that any exposure to sealed and unsealed radioactive material, blood samples and other hazardous waste during working practice is in accordance with government legislation and departmental policies
13.To interpret and apply all relevant legislation when performing Nuclear Medicine investigations.
Management Responsibilities
1. To deputise for the Chief Technologist during their absence, maintaining and responding to the needs of the service as required.
2. To support the Workforce & Professional Development Lead for delegated tasks as required.
3. To manage and direct all diagnostic imaging staff in order to facilitate the clinical workload cross-site.
4. To undertake annual performance reviews for the Nuclear Medicine Imaging team.
5. To ensure that imaging resources are utilised effectively at all times and to recommend change to facilitate best practice.
6. To work with the Service Manager and Patient Services Supervisor to ensure that the national waiting times targets are met through effectively scheduling work and responding to patient demand.
7. To work with the management team by providing input into the annual budget setting process, and to identify opportunities for cost / efficiency improvements and programmes.
8. To monitor individual performance through the appraisal process and through quality control of work. Encourage peer assessment, evaluation and support.
9. To assess the any risks to the health and safety of staff, patients and visitors. The post holder must ensure that identified risks are reported, so that significant clinical and non-clinical risks are included in the Trust’s Risk Register.
10. The post holder will participate, as required, in clinical and non-clinical audit projects aimed at improving patient care and the effective and efficient delivery of services.
11. To report, investigate and respond to potential and actual incidents.
12. To manage the daily quality control of all imaging equipment whilst liaising with scientific staff in order to ensure compliance with quality systems.
13. To facilitate induction, training and development for all Nuclear Medicine Technologists/Radiographers, students and work experience placements in conjunction with the Workforce & Professional Development Lead.
14. To contribute to the development and practice of all research studies being carried out in the department.
15. To take responsibility for professional self-regulation in consultation with the Workforce & Professional Development Lead for advice, guidance and allocation of appropriate resources for training and development.
16. To be involved with recruitment and selection of staff at appropriate levels.
Training, Research & Development
1. To assist in the supervision and clinical instruction of undergraduate and postgraduate staff, including Clinical Technologists, Radiographers, Physicians and Clinical Scientists.
2. To participate in the academic and educational programme of the department as required, and support staff attendance and participation where appropriate.
3. To prepare and present short presentations or lectures for Nuclear Medicine and non-Nuclear Medicine staff.
4. To attend and present at external courses as relevant to the role, and feedback on learning, acting as an ambassador for the Department.
5. To participate in the CPD programme for all staff.
6. To actively participate in the technical and patient focused aspects of the department’s Audit programme.
7. To conduct examinations according to protocol for a range of clinical trials.
8. To participate in the investigation and evaluation of new methods and technology, and its clinical application.
9. To provide training in the use of clinical equipment for other staff and advise on appropriate record keeping.
10.To provide pastoral support for staff as required.
Regulatory Duties
1. To comprehend and adhere to the requirements of IR(ME)R, IRR, Health & Safety, COSHH regulations and other relevant regulations and legislation.
2. To ensure that any changes and practices as a result of your role as RPS are disseminated to the Nuclear Medicine Technologist/Radiographer team.
