Summary
This traineeship opportunity is designed to enable an emerging curator to gain the experience necessary to secure permanent employment within the arts sector. The aim of the fellowship is to enable an individual to forge a long-term pathway as a curator in the visual arts.
About the role
Working alongside the Artistic Director (Exhibitions) and Curator, the Ikon Curatorial Fellow will contribute to the research, development and delivery of exhibitions and public programmes. These include Friends in Love and War / L’éloge des meilleur·es ennemi·es, an exhibition of works from the British Council Collection and macLYON that explores the theme of friendship; a new commission by Mahtab Hussain; and a major survey of Guyanese artist Donald Locke (1930-2010), presented in partnership with Spike Island and Camden Arts Centre.
The Fellow will receive support from the Artistic Director (Education) to engage with educational and cultural communities in Birmingham. They will have the opportunity lead the curation of the 2025 Migrant Festival and contribute to the Stuart Hall Archive Project, delivered with The University of Birmingham.
The Fellow will receive regular mentorship from the Artistic Director (Exhibitions) and have access to a travel and research budget. A personal development plan will identify aims for the Fellowship and encourage the Fellow to reflect on skills and knowledge acquired.
