Summary

Shape the future of government data and information management

The Home Office’s mission is to deliver a safe, fair and prosperous UK. As well as working to reduce crime and enforce the law, we secure the UK border by carrying out immigration and customs controls for people and goods entering the UK. Our Knowledge and Information Management Unit (KIMU) processes some of the most significant datasets in government; we hold over 1 billion personal data records, representing 700 million data subjects and 42.5 billon rows of data. We also play a pivotal role in facilitating the safe implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) across government.

As Head of KIMU, you will work collaboratively across the Home Office and government to shape the management of knowledge, information, records and data as we shift to a digital-by-default approach. You’ll lead the KIM strategy to meet legislative requirements whilst adopting new technologies to ensure we deliver better services for the public. The role includes management of around 60 KIM professionals who are accountable to Home Office ministers and Parliament and regulatory bodies such as the Information Commissioner’s Office and The National Archives.

With a background in knowledge, information and records management, you will have experience of developing an organisation’s corporate memory through knowledge management techniques. Knowledge of generative AI opportunities would be a plus. Your leadership experience will include the ability to foster an organisational culture that is positive about change and to successfully promote a digital-by-default organisation. Excellent communication, networking and negotiating skills are essential as this is a complex, politically influenced, multi-stakeholder environment.

Along with extensive training and development, we offer structured career progression. Other benefits include access to a valuable civil service pension and flexible working arrangements.
