Humberside Police are looking for a highly experienced, skilled legal professional to support the Head of Legal Services in the provision of a comprehensive legal service to the Chief Constables, the Chief Officer Groups and officers and police staff of both Humberside Police and South Yorkshire Police, who have a collaborative Legal Services Unit.

The role is extremely varied and as much as you will lead on Civil Litigation, you will also advise on the broad range of issues which face Policing more generally, which includes but is not limited to Judicial Reviews, advice relating to policing powers, the application of PACE, ensuring we stay true to our ethical and legal compass. You will lead your own team, providing support and guidance to junior colleagues, sharing learning, and identifying and developing talent.

You will build solid relationships across multiple areas of both Forces including with both Forces Chief Officers, and work with the other Principal Lawyers and the Head of Legal to steer the Collaborative Legal Services Unit.

To be considered for this role, you must have up to date knowledge of Civil Litigation legislation and have the confidence and capability to recommend appropriate courses of action and maintain all aspects of care and conduct around each case. You must also have the ability to lead and mentor our talented staff with your experience and knowledge.

As much as the role is based at Priory Road in Hull, the successful candidate will need to travel to Sheffield, therefore, a full UK driving license is required. Both locations have free secure parking onsite.


Key Responsibilities:

To work with the Head of Legal Services as part of a ‘senior legal team’ with responsibilities for taking the strategic lead in the establishment and co-ordination of robust performance management systems in both police forces. To include, assisting with the drafting of reports and potential changes and improvements to business processes, structures and cultures at strategic level to realise the business benefits for the force.
To provide first line management responsibilities for all direct reports to include completing performance development review, delegation of work and where appropriate sets and monitors timescales for completion of work.
To provide each Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable and Senior Command Team with legal advice and identifying organisational risks and opportunities so they can make informed decisions on the Force’s response to all legal matters.
Working with the Police and Crime Commissioner/Mayor to provide accurate legal advice in relation to finance/funding/insurance/litigation/risk.
Managing the delivery of the Force’s response to legal inquiries, monitoring and evaluating the political environment and organisational risks so that the Force is fully prepared and able to make informed decisions on resource and funding priorities in relation to legal matters.

What the role requires:

Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Executive (Fellow).
Detailed knowledge of law and practice in Civil Litigation.
Knowledge and understanding of EHCR and the Civil Procedure Rules.
Experience of managing staff.
Experience of taking the lead on high profile, sensitive and complex matters.
Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of advising and influencing the client.
Ability to manage a diverse caseload which is high risk and complex, providing clear and logically sound advice.
Ability to work in a highly pressurised environment balancing competing demands and able to offer flexibility and accurate advice within tight time constraints.
Demonstrates the ability to be assertive and remain polite and calm in difficult situations.
