Summary

In this role your management responsibilities will be to: *Carry 24 hour continuous responsibility for a ward and manage it within the allocated resources. *Undertake responsibility for the implementation of Trust personnel policies. *Provide the Modern Matron with statistical returns as requested e.g., sickness, annual leave, etc. *Carry responsibility for the planning and co-ordination of annual leave, maintaining appropriate staffing levels and skill mix of ward area. *Provide effective leadership by setting clear objectives and defining roles of staff. *Lead the nursing team, delegating work, organising rotas on an equitable basis and ensuring appropriate skill and grade mix. *Hold responsibility for overall staffing arrangements and nursing rotas organising the most effective use of manpower and skill mix within available resources. *Ensure that nursing staff adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and make periodic checks on the presence of staff names on the live register. *Participate in the planning and commissioning of new services. *Participate in the formal review and evaluation of the services provided. *Demonstrate effective leadership skills to the ward team ensuring a high level of morale within the clinical area, sound organisation, dissemination of information and good communications. *Ensure reports, statements and investigations of accidents, incidents and complaints are carried out and the appropriate authorities are notified. *Undertake responsibility for the management of all subordinate staff within the sphere of influence. *Organise regular communications with staff (ward meetings). *Attend regular meetings with other ward managers. *Attend regular meetings with the senior nurse to discuss issues. *Attend regular meetings with other professionals/heads of departments. *To ensure ward meetings take place. *Liaise with other disciplines. *Liaise with multi-disciplinary teams. Your clinical responsibilities will be to: *Have 24 hour continuous responsibility for the ward. *Participate and ensure the implementation of prescribed care according to agreed standard. *Monitor and evaluate care, initiating any action that may be required. *Ensure the confidentiality of all patient-related information and records, ensuring that staff complies with this policy. *Formulate standards of care statements, evaluating and monitoring the effectiveness of same. *Provide or arrange for a nursing assessment of referred Service Users to determine the suitability for forensic mental health nursing intervention. *Advise staff of other psychiatric services in the nursing care of difficult to manage Service Users. *Ensure that all staff observe the provisions of the Mental Health Act (1983), in particular the Code of Practice and Part III of the Act and regularly monitor the application of the Act. *Attend ward rounds regularly so as to gain an overview of patient needs and presentation across the service and to promote effective communication. *Act as a professional consultant to nursing staff and other professionals on patient care matters. *Exercise professional judgement through experience and knowledge in determining levels of dangerousness in service user population. *Demonstrate an up to date knowledge concerning the health status of Service Users whilst identifying and engaging appropriate nursing interventions, consonant with up to date nursing research and practice developments. *Identify any changes arising from practice developments in nursing and to advise the senior nurse of appropriate action. *Monitor and ensure the maintenance of a high standard of nursing in the applications of clinical nursing procedures and treatments including the custody, storage and administration of medicines. *Establish, formulate and update Unit policies/procedures in consultation with the senior nurse and other policy team members. *Undertake responsibility for the clinical supervision of all subordinate staff within the sphere of influence.
