Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Scientist to join our team workingwithin the NHS rare and inherited disease NHS genomic network of excellence team in Manchester.

The postholder is expected to be a postdoctoral scientist who will utilise their specialist scientific expertise in genomics. The role will involveworking closely with the teams of the Rare Conditions and Advanced Diagnostics themes of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the University of Manchester (UoM) research group of Prof. Siddharth Banka.

This is a 2 year fixed-term (full-time post) based at the North-West Genomics Laboratory Hub, St. Mary’s Hospital, Manchester.

This role will involve:

Evaluation of published developments and innovations relevant to the Rare & Inherited Disease Network of Excellence, and their potential to transfer into clinical practice.

Evaluation and implementation of new methods, technologies and equipment relevant to the Rare & Inherited Disease Network of Excellence.

Analysis of data from various genomic analysis instruments involving the use of specialist software and relevant bioinformatic tools.

Writing of reports and other documents as the project progresses.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the UK, employing over 28,000 staff and is responsible for running a family of ten hospitals across six separate sites. The focus of the Rare Disease NHS Genomic Network of Excellence is to (i) help patients get a diagnosis faster (ii) reduce genomic health inequalities (iii) develop new testing approaches (especially for those patients with a suspected rare disease that remain undiagnosed using current NHS genomic testing (iv) increase the efficiency of analysis and (v) increase capacity for rare condition clinical trials.

The Manchester BRC was awarded more than £60 million (2022-27) and is driving forward pioneering research in the areas of high-burden under-researched conditions (rare conditions, hearing health and mental health), disease complexity and multimorbidity (next generation phenotyping and diagnostics, next generation therapeutics), cancer (prevention and early detection, advanced radiotherapy, precision medicine, living with and beyond cancer) and inflammation (rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease, respiratory medicine, dermatology, integrative cardiovascular medicine).
