Job Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity for one of two posts to help shape the future of terrestrial area-based conservation in Scotland, working as part of a small team charged with delivering the interrelated pieces of work, on 30x30 (the commitment to protect 30% of our land and sea by 2030) and Nature Networks.
The work will focus on positioning NatureScot so that it’s able to allow Scotland to reach the ambitious 30x30 target at speed and in a way that ensures our protected areas and other effective area based conservation measures (OECMs) deliver for biodiversity and people. Following the high-level principles set out in the 30x30 Framework you will be developing the necessary policy, criteria and guidance to allow sites to be identified and then begin to contribute to the 30x30 suite.
You will be working with a broad range of individuals and teams both within NatureScot and also externally, forming relationships with stakeholder groups that will be key to the implementation of 30x30 and Nature Networks. You will be helping to identify hot spots for biodiversity and working with Area colleagues to support local dialogue and action to protected, conserve or restore such areas On Nature Networks, one post will see you contribute towards the Nature Networks Toolbox, a shared resource hub for those looking to carry out projects that will contribute to Nature Networks and that will be of use to those interested in OECMs also. The second post will take a lead role in NatureScot’s (co-sponsored with Scottish Wildlife Trust) CivTech Challenge 8.3, working closely with an external organisation to help ensure the “software as a service” tool is developed in such a way that it achieves NatureScot’s aims in facilitating the roll out of Nature Networks.
Both posts will be contributing to building a transformative approach to area-based conservation in Scotland that can be challenging from both conservation and political points of view. Therefore a positive outlook and an enjoyment of problem solving and working in a collaborative manner to respond to short-notice changes to priorities will be a fundamental requirement for this role.
