Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the blood transfusion team with the opportunity to drive change and lead on this important blood safety initiative. The post holder will become a specialist in the provision and maintenance of Blood Track but will also be responsible for fulfilling the role of a senior transfusion practitioner, working closely with the other members of the transfusion team.

The Blood Track system is integral to ensuring the safe transfusion of patients at GSTT, across Royal Brompton Hospital, Harefield Hospital, Evelina Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, Guy’s Hospital and satellite sites. This system continues to grow following the implementation of an enterprise system jointly with King’s College Hospital (KCH) and is fundamental in the day to day use of blood products.

Monitoring the quality of the service is very important, as is the implementation of changes to provide the optimum service for patients and the Trust.

Closing date: 16-06-2024

Interview date: 27-06-2024

The post holder will be responsible for the continued success of Blood Track, system maintenance ensuring its continued function and business continuity planning whilst providing reporting, teaching, training and education around blood transfusion and safety.

The post holder will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective management of interdependencies and delivery of objectives relating to Blood Track and the wider BT pathway.

The Trust has implemented a new electronic health records system (EPIC). The Apollo Programme will help the Trust transform the way we deliver care and empower our patients to get more involved in decisions about their health. The post holder will ensure that the Blood Track system is optimised and maintained following implementation and stabilisation, working closely with wider teams supporting optimisation and stabilisation across the electronic health record (EPIC), blood tracking and BT Laboratory information management (LIMS) pathway. A key role will be the rigorous definition and ownership of the projects including risk and issue management, implementation, stabilisation and optimisation. GSTT is expected to roll out issue on demand at all GSTT sites in 2024/5.

The role also involves working Trust-wide with staff from all relevant disciplines to promote safe, appropriate and economic use of blood components whilst developing strategies for the Trust.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust comprises five of the UK’s best known hospitals – Guy’s, St Thomas’, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield – as well as community services in Lambeth and Southwark, all with a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation.

We are among the UK’s busiest, most successful foundation trusts. We provide specialist care for patients including heart and lung, cancer and renal services as well as a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Lambeth and Southwark.

We have around 22,700 staff, making us one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country and one of the biggest employers locally. We aim to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and continue to develop new and existing partnerships with local people, patients, neighbouring NHS organisations, local authorities and charitable bodies and GPs.

The post holder will be the link into groups with regards to transformation and business-as-usual in relation to Blood Track. They will attend meetings as a GSTT blood transfusion representative and feedback to colleagues in the GSTT blood transfusion team. It is expected that the specific projects managed by the post holder will change over time as the portfolio of work changes.
