After 1 August 2020, Education Authorities can only appoint the following categories of people as permanent Head Teachers:-

  • People who have achieved the Standard for Headship.
  • People appointed as permanent Head Teachers of a public school, a grant-aided school or an independent school on or before 1 August 2020.

A person who has not yet achieved the Standard for Headship may be appointed as a head teacher, provided the appointment does not exceed 30 months.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Head Teacher to join the team at Southdale Primary School and Early Learning and Childcare (ELC).

The current school role for session 2023-24 is 300 children, organised across 11 classes. There are 55 children in ELC. In addition to class teachers, the management structure currently consists of a Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher and a Principal Teacher. There are 6 Pupil Support Workers (PSWs) deployed at various stages across the school to support whole school working. ELC staffing includes 1 Early Years Officer, 5 Early Years Practitioners and 2 PSWs.

The vision for Southdale Primary School and ELC is to strive to ‘Pave the Path to New Horizons’, be on a joint ‘Journey to Success’, develop ‘Strong Roots in Our Community’ and develop ‘Knowledge and Understanding for the future’.

Through self-evaluation, the school has identified a number of key strengths which include:

  • A strong commitment to children’s rights, particularly supporting pupil voice
  • The development of an innovative curriculum that is designed around the Sustainable Development Goals.

The school has a strong community ethos and benefits from a supportive and proactive Parent Council. The Parent Council and Fundraising Group work in close partnership with the school and are committed to improving the work and life of the school as well as organising fundraising events throughout the year.

A relevant teaching qualification and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland is essential.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.

The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18.
